Hill Harper: My Mom Played a "Huge Part" in My Adoption Decision

For actor Hill Harper, adopting his young son, Pierce, was the best decision he's ever made in his life. And it was a decision, the single dad says, that was greatly informed by advice from his mother, Marilyn.

"There was a lot of uncertainty and fear," Hill says. "I needed help to make that decision, and it was her guidance and her wisdom and her love and support that helped me get there."

Marilyn also helped Hill in the days immediately after bringing baby Pierce home—but knew to let her son take the parental lead and make his own decisions as a father, like his insistence on all things organic. "I knew that he had survived nonorganic, but that was all right with me," Marilyn laughs. "We could go organic if he wanted to. So, it was fun."
