WWE Extreme Rules 2011: 5 Worst Matches in Extreme Rules History

0 of 6

With this year's Extreme Rules PPV right around the corner, you would think that WWE fans would be getting excited for what should be one of the coolest pay-per-views on the WWE schedule.

Instead—possibly due to the recent WWE draft—the hype seems to be lacking.

I love the idea of Extreme Rules.  It's a gimmick PPV that has potential.  But as we have seen in the two years that Extreme Rules has been around, WWE sometimes misses the mark.

Don't get me wrong, there have been some great matches at Extreme Rules, but the same can be said for just about every other PPV.

So let's hope that this year WWE and the superstars turn out to give us a great PPV, and don't drop the ball and give us matches like these; the 5 worst matches in WWE Extreme Rules history.

Extreme Rules 2010: Shad Gaspard vs. JTG - Strap Match

1 of 6

This match was set up three weeks prior to the pay-per-view.  After suffering a loss on SmackDown to R-Truth and John Morrison, Cryme Tyme's Shad Gaspard turned on his tag team partner, JTG, and attacked him.

This set up a strap match between the two to officially break apart one of the fans' favorite tag teams.

This match was bad from the conception.  The idea to break Cryme Tyme up has proven over time to have been a terrible idea.  Shortly after the match, Shad was sent to FCW after being on the main roster for almost four years.

Meanwhile, JTG has remained on the roster, appearing mostly on Superstars, yet he still uses the Cryme Tyme gimmick, complete with music.

Not only was the idea bad, but the match was one of the worst of the night.  The idea of a strap match is that both superstars are strapped together and the first one to touch all four turnbuckles in a row is declared the winner.  You would think that it would take a while to complete the task required to win the match, but this one took less than five minutes.

The crowd was also not into either superstar.  Shad did not come off as a powerful heel, and the fans were not behind JTG enough to care when he pulled out the victory.

In the end, a lackluster match put the stamp on two lackluster careers, neither which will likely ever rebound.

Extreme Rules 2009: John Cena vs Big Show - Submission Match

2 of 6

If you are not familiar with this match, you should already be able to understand how bad it could be just by the participants and the stipulation.

I still can't understand how a submission match falls under the "extreme" category.  If anything, it is less extreme than a normal match.  It is usually slower, longer and doesn't feature as many big spots.

So how do you make a submission match more boring than it already has to be?  Why, just throw in John Cena and Big Show as the competitors.

The idea of Big Show having to try to submit someone is almost comical, and John Cena isn't much of a submission guy either.  Sure he uses the STF, but it sure isn't going to be able to be locked in on Big Show.

The match was dreadfully slow, with two of WWE's biggest powerhouses forced to use submissions instead of their strength, strikes and slams.  After trying to apply the STF on Big Show with no luck, John Cena ended up using the ropes to keep Big Show tied up long enough to lock in a sleeper hold. Thankfully Big Show tapped out, ending the longest 19 minute match ever.

Extreme Rules 2009: Beth Phoenix vs. Michelle McCool - Extreme Makeover Match

3 of 6

Another match that wasn't really extreme was the "Extreme Makeover" match from 2010.

This match was set up after Beth Phoenix was attacked by LayCool two days before the PPV.  LayCool had aligned themselves with SmackDown Consultant Vickie Guerrero, who had been trying to keep Beth Phoenix out of the Women's Title picture.

LayCool hit Phoenix with an ironing board and drew on her with lipstick, setting up the stipulation.

The match's setup was comical.  Mops, buckets, brooms and make-up surrounded the ring as "weapons."  As if that wasn't enough, the attempts by Layla and Vickie Guerrero to interfere in the match were awkward and made the two look completely dumb and useless.

At one point they took a broom and a mop and tried to hit Beth Phoenix while she was on the turnbuckle with McCool, but they couldn't even get that right.

Eventually, Beth Phoenix pulled out the win, won the Women's Championship and started wrestling in real matches again.

One Night Stand 2007: Melina vs. Candice Michelle - Pudding Match

4 of 6

Now, I know that this wasn't a match at Extreme Rules, but One Night Stand was the precursor to Extreme Rules, and this match was just terrible enough to make the list anyway.

I don't know what to say except...really?  Pudding?

I guess that WWE thought that the male audience would enjoy seeing two of WWE's sexiest divas roll around in a pool full of dessert.  That may have been the case if the dessert didn't look like excrement.

Candice Michelle won the match via submission after holding Melina's head under the pudding.  Luckily, Melina was wearing swimming goggles.

This "match" only took about three minutes, and it was three minutes too long.

Santina Marella vs. Vickie Guerrero and Chavo Guerrero: Handicap Hog Pen Match

5 of 6

Talk about one of the worst ideas for a match ever.

In 2009 Santino Marella's twin sister, Santina (who was just Santino in drag), had a feud with Vickie Guerrero over the "Miss WrestleMania" title that he won at WrestleMania XXV.

If that wasn't bad enough, after losing the title to Vickie on Raw, Santina received a chance to win it back at Extreme Rules in a Hog Pen Match.  At the PPV, Vickie announced that Chavo Guerrero would also be participating in the match on her behalf.

Throughout the match, Santina and Chavo brawled in a pen full of mud.  At one point of the match, Chavo attempted to throw a bucket of slop onto Santina, who ducked in time to have the contents spill all over Vickie Guerrero.  After a minute or two of mud-slinging, Santina knocked out Chavo and pinned Vickie to regain the title of "Miss WrestleMania."

Santina was fired by Donald Trump shortly after Extreme Rules, ending the storyline and allowing Santino to come back to full character.

Conclusion

Let's hope that this year's Extreme Rules PPV brings us some matches with a little higher quality.

Please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.  Let me know if you agree with my picks, or there was another bad match that was left of the list.
