No. 1 Razorbacks host John McDonnell Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE – No. 1 Arkansas hosts the John McDonnell Invitational on Friday, April 21, with 18 teams scheduled to compete. Field events start at 10 a.m. and running events begin at 3:30 p.m.

Following an active weekend in Southern California, competing in three different meets, the Razorbacks moved into the No. 1 position in the USTFCCCA national ratings index. The top five teams in the national rankings include Texas Tech, Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida.

“We had a big weekend last week,” noted Arkansas men’s head coach Chris Bucknam. “This week is kind of keeping the rhythm with what we have going.

“We’ll try to run a couple of 4 x 100 relays to see what our personnel will be for that event. As we get closer to the SEC Championships, we have to get that 4 x 100 relay down as far as who is going to run. Then we have some others who just need to get races in and work on what we’ve been doing.”

In addition to the team’s No. 1 ranking this week, the Razorbacks are also in the No. 1 position in three event rankings, based on the average of the top four marks in an event. Arkansas leads the decathlon with a 7,461-point average as well as the long jump (25-7.75|7.81) and discus (188-10|57.55).

“It’s great to be at home,” said Bucknam. “Hopefully the weather is decent, and the wind is not blowing too hard out of the north, so we can get some things accomplished. It was good to get on the road last week, and we needed it to get out of town and get some great competition like we did at Mt. SAC.

“Now our sights are on the SEC meet in three weeks and everything leading up to that is guys trying to secure a spot on that team. For some of our guys this week it’s important they make forward progress. Now, we’re starting to click these meets off and trying to find who the personnel is and try to get some more qualifiers.”

Teams competing include Allen CC, Arkansas Tech, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Central Missouri, Drury, Harding, Kansas, Kansas City, Little Rock, Missouri, Missouri Southern, Missouri State, Oklahoma Christian, Oral Roberts, Ozarks, Southwest Baptist, Tulsa, and William Jewell.
