2012
2012 WTCC SEASON IS GO: ALL SET FOR NEW CHALLENGES!
• New manufacturer, new drivers, new circuits
The eighth season starts in Monza with the Race of Italy
Welcome to the dynamic world of the FIA World Touring Car Championship, one of the most spectacular
and fastest growing motorsports series! In the past seven years, the WTCC established some new
records, consolidating its position alongside the few other FIA World Championships as well as
increasing its popularity worldwide. Entering its eighth season in 2012, the WTCC is ready for another
thrilling year, the second one since the adoption of the new 1.6-litre turbo engine.
The 2012 FIA WTCC will be visiting twelve different countries over four continents, from Europe to Africa before
moving to Americas, including the series’ first visit to the USA on November 23 at California’s Infineon Raceway,
and finally ending with three events in Asia.
The big challenge for the drivers in 2012 is dethroning Yvan Muller who won a second back-to-back title
for Chevrolet in 2011, his third personal Drivers’ Championship after the one he had won in 2008 for SEAT.
Again Muller drives a Chevrolet Cruze 1.6T and must watch out for his own team-mates, the 2011 vice-champion
Rob Huff and the experienced Alain Menu.
Competition on track is due to be even more exciting this year, with the arrival of Team AON that bring Ford’s brand
back to the championship for the first time after 2005, with one of their new Global Focus cars in the hands
of young talented British driver Tom Chilton. 2009 champion Gabriele Tarquini’s expectations to fight back
for the world title have been strongly enhanced since he signed to race for the new Lukoil Racing Team
at the wheel of a SEAT León car powered by a new 1.6-litre turbo engine. The field will be completed by a bunch
of competitive drivers in BMW 320 TC cars, led by race winners Tom Coronel (ROAL Motorsport) and Franz
Engstler (Liqui Moly Team Engstler). Among them are also a couple of promising young racers: the 27-year-old
Hungarian Norbert Michelisz and 2011 Italian Superstar champion Alberto Cerqui who is only 19. And this
is not all, as in 2012 the field will be occasionally increased by the participations of factory-backed Honda Civic
and LADA Granta cars, as both manufacturers have announced plans to compete in the whole championship
from 2013.
WTCC is all about LIVE TV coverage, with a worldwide TV distribution that reached more than 160 countries across
86 TV networks and approximately 460 million viewers around the world. In 2012, the championship offers a wide
digital media offer, through dedicated web sites and Iphone Ipad applications.
These are the ingredients that make the FIA WTCC a unique motorsport series. The fans love it and cannot
wait for another thrilling season!
MAnUFACTURERS
CHEVROlET
After launching the Cruze cars in 2009, which earned six race
wins during its first season, the Chevrolet team managed to win
back-to-back Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ titles in 2010 and 2011.
The three Chevrolet Cruze factory cars are built and run by Ray
Mallock’s RML, one of the most experienced and winning teams
in Touring Car racing. Their trio of drivers is a perfect mix of experience
and speed. Yvan Muller joined Chevrolet to win straighaway the 2010
World Championship and encored in 2011, Alain Menu is a Touring Car legend with two BTCC titles and 12 race
wins in WTCC, Rob Huff is the youngest and regarded as one of the favourites for this year’s title fight after
finishing twice third in 2008 and 2010.
The Chevrolet line-up is completed by the two Cruze cars run by bamboo-engineering.
FORD
Seven years after its only participation in a WTCC season, back
in 2005, the Ford brand returned to the World Championship.
After claiming a number of race victories in the British Touring Car
Championship, UK-based Team AON and Arena Motorsport have
made the leap to the WTCC in which they have entered two Ford
Focus for young English racers Tom Chilton and James Nash.
The team may count on Ford Motorsport’s technical support and
the 1.6-litre turbo engine developed by the experienced Mountune Racing Engines on the basis of the power
plant used by Ford works cars in the World Rally Championship.
SEAT
Although SEAT Sport had officially left the championship after winning
back-to-back Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ titles in 2008 and 2009, the
Spanish brand is well represented. Two SEAT León cars are raced by
the LUKOIL Racing Team for the 2009 World champion Gabriele
Tarquini and young Russian driver Aleksei Dudukalo.
SUNRED Engineering team directed by Joán Orus takes part with two/
three cars, one of them in the hands of the 17-year-old Pepe Oriola, the
youngest ever WTCC driver. From the United Kingdom, Special Tuning Racing return to the championship
(after 2009) with two cars, one driven by Tom Boardman. The 2012 season should be regarded SEAT’s first
step towards a comeback with a works team, and as a matter of fact SEAT Sport has built and homologated
a new 1.6 litre turbo engine.
BMW
Faithful to its tradition of exploiting motor sport programmes to
promote its road cars, BMW confirmed its presence in WTCC in which
it clinched the Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ titles three consecutive
years, from 2005 to 2007.
In order to support the customer teams, BMW Motorsport developed
a kit to update the 320si cars to 320 TC, including the 1.6-litre turbo
engine.
Italy-based ROAL Motorsport, directed by the 1987 WTCC champion Roberto Ravaglia, is the reference team
and field two BMW 320 TC car for Dutch race winner Tom Coronel and for young Italian ace Alberto Cerqui.
Other teams representing BMW are Liqui Moly Team Engstler and Proteam Racing with two cars each, Zengö
Motorsport and Wiechers-Sport with one car each.
HOnDA
The Japanese car maker announced they will take part in the last
three events of the 2012 WTCC in view of joining the Championship
for the full season from 2013.
Honda will enter the new Civic 5-door car, built at Honda’s British
plant in Swindon.
Italian outfit J.A.S. Motorsport will run the programme, while Mugen is
in charge to build and develop the new 1.6-litre turbo engine designed
by Honda R&D.
This is Honda’s first works car racing programme since the brand pulled out of Formula One.
lADA
Avtovaz, Russia’s first car manufacturer announced that the LADA
Sport team will take part in two events of the 2012 WTCC at Hungaroring
and Estoril, with a Granta Sport car developed for WTCC on the basis
of the car built for the Russian Granta Cup.
The aim is to launch a three-year works programme in WTCC from
2013; they had already competed in the world championship in 2008
and 2009.
LADA Sport have already signed British Touring Car ace James Thompson for testing and racing in 2012.

TV PRODUCTIOn
Eurosport Events, Host Broadcaster
Eurosport Events is in charge of the TV Production for the 2012 FIA WTCC season.
As part of the Eurosport Group, Eurosport Events takes benefit of the Broadcasters’ expertise to use both the
latest technology and the editorial know-how to offer the best possible TV coverage of the FIA WTCC.
High Definition
The high-quality and innovative Live TV production has been further enhanced in 2009, as the WTCC has become
the first FIA World Championship to be produced in native High Definition.
The plans for the 2012 calendar include the production in HD of most of the championship’s rounds:
– All the seven European events including Marrakech
– Sonoma, Suzuka and Shanghai
In addition to Eurosport HD channel
– the high definition simulcast of
Eurosport – several broadcasters
are expected to air WTCC in HD
over the course of the season.
For the first time in 7 WTCC seasons,
all 24 on-board cameras will be in
HD for a better broadcast quality.

TV production facilities
The HD broadcasts of WTCC will be produced using an average of:
– 14 track-side HD cameras
– 2 RF HD cameras for the coverage of the starting grid, pre-race, pit lane, paddock and post-race
– 24 on-board HD 16:9 cameras
– 1 new Digital TV Outside Broadcast van developed by Belgium-based company Alfacam
The TV production is developed with the ‘look and feel’ of the FIA WTCC brand image which also includes
on-screen graphic animation as part of the international feed, giving key information on the drivers, the teams,
the speed and the race. This makes the championship attractive and understandable to a wide range of viewers
around the world.
Eurosport Events produces both the FIA WTCC International Signals and private programs for Eurosport.
TV DISTRIBUTIOn
Eurosport Events, host broadcaster and TV rights holder of the FIA WTCC will continue to implement its TV
distribution strategy and secure TV exposure on terrestrial TV channels for each country included on the 2012
calendar. To complement this, Eurosport Events also targets the most popular pan-regional cable-satellite
platforms to execute global TV exposure for the FIA WTCC.
In 2012, the championship will be transmitted by more than 77 channels across 175 countries.
