President’s Message
Summer is in full swing at
Filoli and we have been very
busy. Jazz has begun and
we had our first Twilight
Stroll, which everyone
thoroughly enjoyed. Our
Summer Festival was a
fun filled family event. Jan
Roth did a great job as chair
providing the families who
attended with a variety of
entertainment and a delicious
barbecue lunch on the tennis
court. The Summer Evening
Party, chaired by Connie
French, had “Pearls of the Orient” as its theme. It gave our
guests a chance to relax and stroll through the House and
Gardens and then have a wonderful dinner and even a little
dancing! Thanks to everyone involved in these events. You
make Filoli the special place that it is.
A special thanks to Filoli’s employees and volunteers who
did such a great job with the American Public Garden
Association’s annual meeting. Filoli was one of the hosts
of this event and it gave us a chance to show off the many
facets of Filoli. The gardens at Filoli play such an important
part in who we are. “Flowers in the Home” and the Botanical
Art Exhibition gave everyone a chance to appreciate the role
flowers and art play at Filoli. We are very proud to have
our own Filoli Florilegium as well as the Banks Florilegium
to display for our guests. I hope everyone had a chance to
view these beautiful collections.
Please take some time to come to Filoli and enjoy all that
we have to offer. Tour the house and wander through the
gardens, noticing all the effort that has gone into preserving
Filoli, making it such a wonderful country estate for all to
enjoy. I look forward to seeing you!
September and October 2006, Filoli Highlights
by Bob Mitchell
From our
Library
We are all familiar with the wonderful collection of books
and printed reference material available to all members
of Friends of Filoli (FOF) in the Friends library, but many
are yet unaware of a treasury of videotapes specifically
produced for use by volunteers and other members of
FOF.
Located in a drawer directly beneath the television set in
the Friends Library there are over 40 titles covering the
history of Filoli and those who called Filoli their home.
There is also a video tour of Friends taking a tour of
the Empire Mine in Grass Valley, where gold from the
mine played a major role in the acquisition of the Bourn
family wealth that ultimately resulted in the creation of
Filoli. The documentary takes you on a guided tour of
the Empire Mine, the magnificent grounds, the recreation
center and the Empire cottage which was the part-time
residence of the Bourn family.
Also don’t miss the room by room tour of the Filoli
mansion by Tom Rogers, curator of the Filoli mansion.
Be sure you catch Tom’s blooper reel which follows the
original production.
The library also features interviews with members of
the families including Bill Roth and his sisters, Lurline
Coonan and Berenice Spalding as well as A.W.B. (Billy)
Vincent and W. Alston Hayne. In a private taping session,
Timmie Gallagher narrates to her fabulous collection of
Filoli historic slides some never before shown publicly.
Some of the pioneers in the FOF organization are also
featured in videos, including Sally MacBride, Lucy
Dobson, Donna Peterson (interviewed by Susan Hine),
Maureen Smith and Victor Thompson Also available are
all of the Tom and Lucy yearly updates.
Latest additions include an interview between Tom
Rogers and Timmie Gallagher, plus Bill Roth’s return to
Filoli and his conversation with his sisters, Lurline and
Berenice.
The videotapes are available on a seven day loan basis
to all members of FOF. A binder containing a complete
index and descriptions of all Filoli Production tapes is
available in the Friend’s Library.
All FOF video productions are produced and directed by
Bob Mitchell with a lot of help from his friends.
September and October 2006, Filoli Highlights
To volunteer is to give freely of one’s time
and talent to benefit a group or cause
with no expectation of reward or payment.
Volunteers are an integral part of what makes Filoli special.
For thirty years, we have attracted people who want to
spend time here helping Filoli accomplish its mission.
Lurline Roth’s wish was that volunteers at Filoli would treat
the home and its guests as if it were their own, with warmth
and congeniality to all who visit the property. Today, the
Friends of Filoli participate in every area of the organization
– from the garden, to the house and libraries, the Garden
Shop, Café, to giving tours, arranging flowers, and chairing
events. Collectively, they have donated over 80,000 hours to
Filoli on an annual basis.
The Friends started out as a small, intimate group of less
than 20 in 1976 and have grown to a larger, more structured
organization of over 1,100 in 2006. A lot has changed over
the years, but the camaraderie among the volunteers as they
work together is a constant. Friends become friends through
shared activities and events. The early days saw events run
Volunteers
September and October 2006, Filoli Highlights
from volunteers’ homes and kitchens. Cookies were baked
and sandwiches were made to serve at events. Our first
Friends’ Appreciation Day had 14 guests; 7 of them brought
by Sally MacBride. Originally, guided tours were conducted
only in the garden; the house was not open and its rooms
were not furnished. The original Tour Office was located in
the Gentlemen’s Cloak Room and the Membership Office
was one small room in the servants’ wing. Today, we have
expanded operations and events to the point where we use
professional caterers and entertainers and rely upon fulltime
employees for administration and management.
The Volunteer Appreciation Party is an annual function
where the Filoli Center says, “Thank You!” to the volunteers
in a special way. This year the format will change a bit. On
Sunday, October 1, 2006, the Visitor and Education Center
will become the location for food stations and beverages as
we dedicate the Friends’ Garden in back of the Café to the
Friends of Filoli and its past Presidents. We encourage all
volunteers to join in the festivities of the day. Our volunteers
are special people, loyal to Filoli and its mission. Thanks to
each and every one of you.
Please join us for this casual dinner party as we dance
under the stars to the irresistible melodies of the
popular swing band, the Unicorns. This year’s theme,
“Pearls of the Orient,” celebrates the gemstone of our
30th Anniversary and the Orient, which reflect the close
ties the Matsons and the Roths had to the trade routes
and ports of call in the Pacific.
Tickets may be ordered by calling
Looking for a fun activity? Filoli has many!
Each month, this section showcases three
to four different activities, in hopes that you
will see one or two in which you would like
to participate. With Filoli now open six days
a week, additional volunteers are needed to
provide the many services that our members
and guests enjoy. If you are interested in
joining an activity or would just like more
information, please contact Bruce Fogel
at 364-8300 x300 or at volunteer@filoli.
Volunteers greet guests, answer phones, give
information, sell admission tickets and book
reservations to Filoli events. Volunteers are
taught to run the computer booking system. For
volunteers who prefer not to use the computer,
your help is welcomed in answering the phone,
giving information and selling tickets. Most
of the activities are indoors. Occasionally, in
good weather, tickets are sold outdoors. The
commitment is two to four three-hour shifts
per month. Volunteers who can commit once a
month, especially on a Saturday, are welcome.
Shifts are from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon or 12:00
assisting members in finding material through
the library catalogue system and helping with
Max the Garden Cat
Beloved Filoli garden cat Max,
passed away on June 10, shortly after
being diagnosed with cancer. A friend
to staff, volunteers and of many of
our visitors, he was happy following
people through the garden or joining
them on the benches near the Dressing
Rooms. Max could get sassy if petted
too long. An excellent addition to the
garden from the start, he would sit and
wait for hours until a varmint would
come out of its hole. In the last couple
years he even managed to catch a few
of the destructive rabbits that have
recently returned to the garden.
Max was found in January of 1990 by
garden volunteer Oliver McComas,
who brought the abandoned kitten
Non-Profit Org.
to the property. He lived the rest of
his life in the Sunken Garden area
tool shop, cared for by many area
gardeners over the years: Don Ellis,
Dolores Souza, Mike Schmidt, Ann
Jansen, Jim Salyards, Chuck Mustain,
John Peck, Mimi Clarke, Brooke
Starke, Sydney Nahay, Shannon
Bielicke and David Shippy.
And in the last few years, he spent
some warm nights in Lucy and
Jonathan’s house.
