Spruce Pine Tree

Spruce Pine Tree, also called Walter pine or cedar pine, are hardy evergreen trees that thrive in sunny environments with moist, acidic, fertile soil. These trees are native to the riverbanks and swamps of the Southeastern United States between South Carolina and Louisiana and are most likely to succeed in Hardiness Zones 8 and 9. They grow best in warm regions with long, humid summers and mild winters. While they prefer full sun and moist, sandy soil with a low pH, they are very versatile trees.

It Is Shade-Tolerant

They are more shade-tolerant than most other types of pines, and they can grow in more soil types. They are also considered to be especially resistant to insects and disease when compared to many other species of evergreen trees. A mature tree can reach a maximum height of 60 to 100 ft. and a width of 30 to 40 ft, though when planted alone, they often reach a height of 30-50 ft. These trees can live up for up to 80 years in ideal conditions. They are evergreens, so their soft, bushy needles remain fresh, fragrant, and deep green in color year-round. They do not bloom but begin producing oval-shaped red cones at ten years.

The Evergreen Tree Does Good In Wetlands

They are well suited for warm, wet areas with high water tables, but they can still be cultivated in a wide variety of low altitude coastal regions. They may require some extra watering during dry summers as well as some pruning as they mature, but they are otherwise easy to care for and maintain. Young trees have bushy, whorled branches that grow close to the ground.

Because of this unique growth pattern and their deep, strong root systems, they can be used in hedges or as windbreaks. Immature trees are sometimes used as Christmas trees because of their fullness--making them perfect for an unusual and interesting boundary or buffer at the edge of a property. They can be successfully planted in yards or smaller grassy areas like medians, tree lawns, or parking lot islands.
