Finally, the eldest boy has won something. Disney Channel has greenlit a Wizards of Waverly Place sequel series, giving David Henrie the opportunity to reprise his role as oldest wizard sibling Justin Russo. After starring in a pilot episode, Henrie is officially set for a series-regular role. He’ll also be executive-producing the show alongside his onscreen sister Selena Gomez, who will guest star in the first episode. “Wizards of Waverly Place captivated hearts with its spellbinding adventures and big laughs, creating unforgettable memories for kids and families everywhere,” Ayo Davis, the president of Disney Branded Television, said in a press release confirming the news. “We can’t wait to step back into the magical world of Wizards, inviting both longtime fans and a new generation to experience the enchantment alongside Selena, David, and our incredible cast and crew.” Here’s everything we know.
What’s it about, and who’s in the cast?
Deadline previously reported that a pilot episode followed Justin, who gave up his wizard powers after a mysterious accident at WizTech, a wizarding school — not a tech company. He isn’t a tech bro in this timeline. It’s almost re-writing history because the original series ended with Justin keeping his powers. Per an official show description, Justin has grown up and chosen to lead a normal, mortal life. But he has to tap back into his magical side when Alex introduces him to a powerful young wizard named Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown). Justin must mentor Billie “while also juggling his everyday responsibilities – and safeguarding the future of the Wizard World.”
Billie is described as the lead of the show, which is a bit of a random choice considering Gomez’s performance as Alex skyrocketed her career and became a personality trait for teenagers everywhere. She wouldn’t have time to layer up in her old costumes, though— she’s too busy becoming Linda Ronstadt, where the only magic is her voice. Even Max, the sandwich-shop heir played by Jake T. Austin, would’ve been fun to follow around. But nope, we’re sticking with a former head wizard who was apparently happy to stop using magic. Also, Justin now has two sons, Roman (Alkaio Thiele) and Milo (Max Matenko). Two boys! Not even a mini Alex to torture him in adult life. In this version, there’s no fan service as Justin isn’t even with Juliet — his wife is someone named Giada (Mimi Gianopulos). Who else is involved?
Reboot veterans Jed Elinoff and Scott Thomas of Raven’s Home are writing the show. The duo will also be executive producing alongside Henrie, Gomez, and Gary Marsh (Descendants: The Rise of Red). Meanwhile, She’s the Man director Andy Fickman will direct multiple episodes.
When is it coming out?
Production is set to begin in April in Los Angeles. Wizards is scheduled to wave its way onto both Disney Channel and Disney+ later this year.
