2023 comes to a close with an impressive array of page-to-screen adaptations. Directors and showrunners have drawn from prestige-y favorites (Eileen), nostalgic choices (The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes), and persisting classics (Dracula) for their screen versions. With their textual roots in a wide range of genres — YA books, iconic novels, fictional oral histories, long-running comics — these 90 adaptations’ sources are well worth a read before you see them in the theater or on your home screen.

A love story and political thriller intertwined, McCarthy-era Washington is the setting for an unusual romance between two men. Hawkins Fuller is a charismatic politician and Tim Laughlin (Bailey) is a young man brimming with idealism. We get a new perspective on the legacy of Elvis, after Baz Luhrmann’s glossy biopic, with Sofia Coppola’s Priscilla. Based on Priscilla Presley’s 1985 memoir, Presley recounts the true life of the King of Rock ’n’ Roll from the perspective of the woman who loved him. The unprecedented insight offers a new side of Elvis, one that includes her teenage crush, the drama of affairs, and private moments out of the spotlight.

In 1870s London society, corsets are tight and upper lips are stiff. However, the arrival of a group of wealthy and ambitious young American women sparks an Anglo-American culture clash. They were sent across the pond to locate a husband and gain a title but these buccaneers end up putting a spanner in the works of tradition. While their suitors remain enamored by aristocratic notions of wealth, these women are in search of something more than an “I do.”

The Buccaneers, starring Kristine Froseth, Alisha Boe, and Josie Totah, will stream on Apple TV+ on November 8.

Continuing the legacy of Suzanne Collins’s smash hit Hunger Games series, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is set 64 years before Katniss Everdeen’s mission to survive. At the tenth annual Hunger Games, 18-year-old Coriolanus Snow is far from the tyrannical dictator we now know him to be. Instead, the odds are against him. He’s set up to mentor Lucy Gray Baird of District 12. His fate is beside Baird’s, but he must ensure he’s not blinded by desire in his fight to survive.

If you haven’t had nightmares about Hugh Grant as an Oompa Loompa, I’m jealous. The famous Roald Dahl book showcases Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory of excess, where the grass is sweet and rivers flow with chocolate. The upcoming Wonka, though, focuses on a young Willy as he works to establish his chocolate empire and befriend the Oompa Loompas.

Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet, Calah Lane, and Keegan-Michael Key, is coming to theaters December 15.

The beloved story of Percy Jackson sees the eponymous 12-year-old boy discover he’s a modern demigod and enter the world of Greek mythology. Here, unbelievable monsters and the Olympian gods come alive around him. Thrown into this world, he’s accused of stealing Zeus’s master lightning bolt. To prove himself innocent, he’s tasked with returning Zeus’s stolen property and restoring peace to Mount Olympus.

A musical adaptation of Alice Walker’s 1982 novel, The Color Purple follows the life of a young African American girl named Celie Harris. The story chronicles the lifelong struggles African American women experienced during the early 20th century. Set in rural Georgia with a narrative spanning 40 years, Celie writes letters to God where she details her experiences, the worst of which include domestic violence, child sexual abuse, poverty, racism, and sexism.

The Color Purple, starring Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, and Fantasia Barrino, is coming to theaters December 25.

The Dark One, a cosmic force of evil in the universe, was destroyed last season … or was it? Turns out the Dark One did not die but was unleashed. With new threats on the horizon, Moiraine’s mission is to defeat the universe’s evil in a world-spanning journey with friends old and new. Shepherd Rand has Moiraine suspicious that he could be the Dragon Reborn with the power to save or end the world.

The world of network broadcast morning news is one full of dramatic eventualities. It was March 2020 and COVID-19 was shutting down the world when the last season concluded, but as a new season begins, it seems the network could be in trouble. The drama never ends!

Recounting the night of occult trickery (which included a suspicious séance), Detective Poirot is tasked with solving the ghostly death that is haunting the partygoers.

A Haunting in Venice, starring Kenneth Branagh, Kyle Allen, and Camille Cottin, is streaming on Hulu.

The true story of Redditors plotting to outdo Wall Street with a get-rich-quick scheme is set to become a big-screen comedy-drama. This moment for the history books saw everyday people go head-to-head against billionaires as an online community made mall video-game store GameStop the world’s most exciting company. Initially a tip from Keith Gill, who sunk his life savings into the stock, the internet got ahold of the outlandish dream, and there was no turning back.

Dumb Money, starring Paul Dano, Pete Davidson, and Vincent D’Onofrio, is not yet available on VOD.

A spinoff of the satirical superhero show The Boys, Gen V is set to chronicle the antics of misfits at a superhero college. The Godolkin University School of Crimefighting, run by Vought International, is where the young “supes” fight in battle-royal challenges to prepare them for the big bad world, where danger lurks around every corner. As Godolkin pushes the youngsters to become the best and brightest heroes, the students’ physical, sexual, and moral boundaries are tested to the extreme.

Gen V, starring Jaz Sinclair, Chance Perdomo, and Lizze Broadway, is streaming on Prime Video.

The ​​French mystery thriller is a retelling of the story of world-famous thief and master of disguise Arsène Lupin. In the Netflix show, Assane Diop is a cunning teenager inspired by the adventures of the legendary Lupin. The only son of an immigrant from Senegal who came to France, Assane will do anything to avenge his father, who was framed for the theft of a diamond necklace. Assane sets out to take revenge on the wealthy Pellegrini family for their wrongdoings.

Lupin part III, starring Omar Sy, Ludivine Sagnier, and Clotilde Hesme, is streaming on Netflix.

The upcoming second season of Loki, part of the MCU’s Phase 5, reunites with the titular God of Mischief. The multiverse-traveling sci-fi last saw Loki fighting to control the Time Variance Authority, and with the birth of a new multiverse, the second season will follow Loki building a team, including Mobius and Hunter B-15, to battle for authority. Meanwhile, Loki is on the search for Sylvie, Ravonna Renslayer, and Miss Minutes.

They are the only life for miles, so it’s a shock when someone knocks at their door and announces Junior has been selected to venture to a space station and Henrietta will be left with some very familiar company.

Martin Scorsese’s forthcoming Killers of the Flower Moon has an impressively stacked cast. David Grann’s book is an exploration of the Osage Reign of Terror, a period from the early 1920s to the 1930s when white settlers murdered and dispossessed an Osage family’s Oklahoma lands over the oil-rich deposits. The book charts new details from FBI investigations, trials, and convictions of the minds behind this plot of horrific genocide.

Killers of the Flower Moon, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone, is now playing in theaters.

The six-episode Netflix adaptation of The Lying Life of Adults, directed by Edoardo De Angelis, follows protagonist Giovanna as she graduates from childhood to adolescence. With the backdrop of 1990s Naples, Elena Ferrante’s best-selling 2020 novel provides the rich story of a young woman trying to find her estranged aunt — whom everyone says she resembles — and, in turn, her true self.

Miriam Toews’s 2018 novel was loosely inspired by real-life events at the Manitoba Colony, an ultraconservative Mennonite community in Bolivia whose members were put on trial in 2011 for the rapes of upwards of 100 women. Sarah Polley’s adaptation takes place in a fictional isolated Mennonite colony where women have spent years being abused. The film begins after the abusers have been sent to jail; in flashbacks, Polley’s narrative focuses on the fallout from this trauma.

Following the critically acclaimed first season of AMC’s Interview With the Vampire, the Lives of the Mayfair Witches trilogy is the next in Anne Rice’s canon to be adapted for the screen. The supernatural horror fantasy centers on a family of witches who, generations ago, conjured up a spirit they named Lasher. It’s a self-destructive spell that torments each new descendant. In the present day, Rowan, born into the lineage, discovers a man’s drowned body on the shore and magically revives him. He awakens with powers too. Jumping from the present to the past, Rice’s storytelling is bewitching.

Marc Forster’s A Man Called Otto is a remake of the 2015 Swedish film A Man Called Ove, itself an adaptation of Fredrik Backman’s novel of the same name. The story follows the grumpy 60-year-old Otto/Ove, who is forced to retire from his job of 40 years after his wife dies. When he’s faced with this wall of bad news, his loneliness becomes unbearable and he decides to commit suicide. His attempts are interrupted by some lively new neighbors with whom he forms an unlikely friendship. The young family next door not only spoils his plans but shows him that life can become joyous again.

A Man Called Otto, starring Tom Hanks, Rachel Keller, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, is streaming on Netflix.

Wolf Pack is a supernatural teen drama about a trio of teenagers who can shape-shift into wolves — some real Twilight vibes. Their freedom is obliterated when a TV crew captures their transformations and one of them, Tora, is captured by scientists. Left behind, her brothers plot a rescue. The only solution is to turn into werewolves, which they are forbidden to do. If they attempt to go to the dark side, will they ever return?

Frances O’Connor’s upcoming biographical film about Emily Brontë is not a direct adaptation of the renowned English author’s Wuthering Heights but a tale of how the novel came to be. Emily provides a fictionalized account of Brontë’s inspirations when her sister asks her to reveal them. Between episodes of love, supernatural experiences, and heartbreak, she pens her famous novel with a desire for purpose and preservation.

This sequel 2019’s Shazam! (which will end up being one of the last DC movies before a continuity reboot), sees Billy and his foster family adjusting to their newfound superhero abilities. Coming of age as teenagers and coming to terms with their alter egos, the crew is thrown into its first challenge as Atlas’s trio of daughters try to take Shazam’s power, which they believe has been stolen from them. Shazam and his trusty allies must rebuild their superpowers for battle and protect the fate of the world.

Dracula, however, won’t lose his obedient servant without a bloody fight.

As the history of the physicist unfolds, questions of intention, morals, and consequences are confronted in the pursuit of scientific progress.

The second season of Good Omens reunites the unlikely duo of angel Aziraphale and wayward demon Crowley. Donnie and Joe’s newfound musical success three decades on unlocks an unlikely journey, from their humble beginnings to inconceivable success.

Shortcomings is a politically charged, long-form graphic novel that explores the life of a young Asian American male in American society. The story orbits Ben Tanaka, a Japanese American movie-theater owner in his late 20s, and his girlfriend Miko Hayashi. Ben struggles to integrate into the Asian American community like Miko. In a fiery mix of resentment and obsession, Ben disastrously attempts to pursue other women and goes on a journey for contentment with his identity.

Shortcomings, starring Justin H. Min, Sherry Cola, and Ally Maki, is in theaters August 4.

Painkiller is based on both Patrick Radden Keefe’s New Yorker article “The Family That Built an Empire of Pain” and Barry Meier’s book Pain Killer. The six-episode series charts the origins of the opioid crisis, paying particular attention to Purdue Pharma, a manufacturer of OxyContin. Purdue launched an unprecedented marketing campaign that claimed the drug’s long-acting formulation made it safer than traditional painkillers to use. What followed was a devastating crisis of drug abuse that is chronicled through the eyes of perpetrators, victims, and truth-seekers.

“The Captain’s Log,” a chapter in Bram Stoker’s classic 1897 novel Dracula, is the basis of The Last Voyage of Demeter. Set on a Russian sailing ship carrying 24 unmarked wooden crates from Carpathia to London, the supernatural horror movie follows a crew embarking on a perilous journey. They have no idea about the strange events that will haunt them on the ocean voyage. There’s a terrifying presence onboard the ship that is stalking them — this time, it’s not Nicolas Cage as Dracula.

The Last Voyage of Demeter, starring Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, and Liam Cunningham, is in cinemas on August 11.

DC’s Blue Beetle sees a college graduate become a superhero. Jaime Reyes graduates and returns to his hometown, Palmera City, to work out his next steps. However, it seems the universe already has big plans for him: When he’s chosen to be the symbiotic host to the Scarab (an ancient alien biotechnological relic), he’s granted a powerful armor that turns him into the superhero Blue Beetle.

Blue Beetle, starring Xolo Maridueña, Adriana Barraza, and Damián Alcázar, is in theaters on August 18.

When the Vuvv land on Earth, it’s not the alien invasion humans were expecting. With the Vuvv’s arrival comes revolutionary technology that replaces everyone’s jobs, including Adam’s parents. Adam is a teenage aspiring artist who does not have the funds for food, clean water, or the Vuvv’s miraculous medicine. In order to survive, Adam hatches a very risky plan to save his family from an impoverished and unemployed fate.

Expanding on Wonder, White Bird turns its attention to Julian’s grandmother, Grandmère. The graphic novel charts Grandmère’s story, which originated with her as a young Jewish girl hiding in a Nazi-occupied French village during World War II. It’s a harrowing tale of friendship and loss when Grandmère’s hero comes from an unexpected place.

White Bird, starring Ariella Glaser, Orlando Schwerdt, and Bryce Gheisar, is in theaters on August 18.

Based on a 2013 Wired article, Radical situates itself in an Elementary school in Matamoros that has some of the worst academic scores in all of Mexico. The neglected border town seems like a place of hopelessness. However, there’s one teacher who sees potential. Sergio Juarez veers from the traditional mind-numbingly boring lessons and with inventive classes (that he’s creating on the fly with no prior planning) he happened on an emerging educational philosophy.
