Marvel's Runaways Season 3 Review: A Crossover of Teen Heroes

at .

We are sadly getting closer to the series finale and the ending is becoming all too real.

But, thankfully, Marvel's Runaways seems to be going out with a bang -- of iconic episodes of course.

Marvel's Runaways Season 3 Episode 7, Marvel's Runaways Season 3 Episode 8, and Marvel's Runaways Season 3 Episode 9 are all truly oustanding hours of television that showcase the very best of the show.

Dagger - Marvel's Runaways Season 3 Episode 8

Out of all of them, however, Marvel's Runaways Season 3 Episode 8 has to be the best.

On a crossover that has been teased for a while now, Tyrone and Tandy -- AKA Cloak and Dagger -- teamed up with the Runaways to save Alex from the dark dimension. And it was the stuff of dreams.

Tyrone and Tandy had amazing chemistry with all the Runaways -- minus Molly, who sadly sat out for most of the hour. If they were to team up all the time and create a new show with all eight of them, it would be magic.

They produced the most laughs on any episode so far this season.

Tandy: I'm sorry, what are your powers again?
Chase: Oh uh, I got these super cool bionic prosthetic gauntlets called Fistigons...that aren't here.
Gert: I am psychically linked to a dinosaur who is also not here.
Tandy: Cool, cool, cool, cool, cool. At least one of you guys has some firepower.
Nico: Uh, extraterrestrial abilities don't work in here so Karolina's-
Karolina: Powerless.

Plus, all their personalities clashed and meshed in ways that produced conflicts -- Nico versus Tandy -- and new friendships -- Chase and Tyrone. If only they got to stick around for longer.

Deanoru - Marvel's Runaways Season 3 Episode 8

As a bonus, we also got to see the parallel between Nico and Karolina's relationship and Tyrone and Tandy's.

They are both two versions of light and dark -- two opposites that shouldn't work, but for some reason do and bring out the best in one another.

Tandy: Hey, that thing that happened before with Nico's hopes-
Karolina: No, she's right. It wasn't cool to invade her privacy like that.
Tandy: I didn't ask for this power. And, I'm not gonna tell you what I saw. I just wanted to say...maybe I was wrong about her. You two are light and dark like Ty and me. Maybe you guys balance each other out in the same way.

Which, thankfully, Karolina and Nico saw, and they were able to make amends for their fight regarding Morgan. So, not only did Cloak and Dagger help the Runaways save Alex, but they were also able to teach the teens a thing or two.

Tell me again why both of these shows got canceled?

Gert, Chase, & Karolina - Marvel's Runaways Season 3 Episode 7

Finally, Gert and Chase made up and got back together.

Once again, it is partly thanks to Cloak and Dagger. Well, mostly Tyrone but it sounds cooler to call them by their superhero names.

You know what they say about near death experiences...kinda make you realize stuff. I guess, just uh what I realized was that, um, I haven't really been fair to you. I thought that I had grown up a lot, but then you left and you really hurt me in exactly the way I always feared you would. And it turned be back into that, that high school girl who, who just picked on you because I was so afraid that I wasn't enough. And Ty made me realize that I cannot operate out of fear anymore, and I'm sorry.

Gert

Tyrone made Gert see how much Chase meant to her when he accidentally showed her her greatest fear -- losing Chase, Molly, and Old Lace.

Chase also showed Gert how important she was to him when he showed her that he was researching colleges for her. And now they are back together, and all is right with the world.

If Marvel's Runaways has taught us anything, it's that opposites truly do attract and make for the best relationships.

Alex and Darius - Marvel's Runaways Season 3 Episode 8

They were able to save Alex from the dark dimension. Or were they?

In the comics, Alex turns evil, and it seems as if that is the route the show wants to take as well.

Alex killed his mother, even though it technically was not real, and it was to save his friends. However, he still could perform such a heinous crime, and we did see him kill one of Morgan's coven members later on.

Is Alex truly turning evil? Was his mother right when she told him he was becoming more and more like her?

We most likely will never find out as Marvel's Runaways was canceled before they could truly explore that storyline.

Robert's Death - Marvel's Runaways Season 3 Episode 7

Stepping back a bit, we now have our second major death of the season -- Robert Minoru. Morgan is not one to underestimate.

This death is a bit sadder than Catherine's because he always seemed to be less evil than the rest of the parents.

Plus, he died in Nico's arms in a scene that was heartbreaking to watch.

Robert: See the world as I saw it.
Nico: I love you Dad.
Robert: I love you too.

Robert was able to perform one last heroic move though when he gave Nico the glasses that recorded Morgan's spell.

Morgan le Fay - Marvel's Runaways Season 3 Episode 9

For their final battle against Morgan, the Runaways did the unthinkable and teamed up with PRIDE.

Who would have thought that the parents who killed seventeen teenagers and played the victim in doing so would get their moment of redemption?

Well it turns out that there are people who are far worse than evil parents and, thankfully, character development is alive and well.

We're superheroes Gert. And I think that means we have to do something with it.

Molly

With all of the Runaways and their parents combined expertise, they might have a chance at defeating Morgan.

And they were able to. But it wasn't without sacrifice.

Chase Is Down - Marvel's Runaways Season 3 Episode 9

In a moment that no one saw coming, Gert pulled the most heroic move anyone can make and sacrificed her life to save her family.

Of course, it was just as she and Chase made up and were planning their future together. Why Marvel's Runaways? Why would you do this to us?

Gert: You're supposed to be some great powerful witch? Blah blah blah. You got the look, I'll give you that. Cape's a bit much for my taste, but I'm not gonna judge a woman for what she wears, you do you. Don't try to tell me that you're some kind of symbol of female empowerment. The truth is that you are a bully and all you want is power for yourself.
Morgan: Wow, you see right through me.
Gert: Yeah, yeah I think it's kind of sad and also really just limiting. Because when you do things for other people you get strength from that, from them. And no matter how many times you go down you get right back up over and over as many times as you have to.

Gert is the last person of the group I expected to die, and the tears were running pretty much nonstop the entire scene. But, it just goes to show how true of a hero she was.

And can we talk about the shots of Old Lace trying to break out of the locked room and Chase sobbing as he held Gert in his arms? By calling them heartbreaking is putting it very mildly.

There better be a way to undo Gert's death somehow because it is one many will refuse to accept. Anything is possible when we are talking about superheroes.

What did you think Marvel's Runaways Fanatics?

How do you feel about Gert's death? Would you want to see a Runaways/Cloak and Dagger spinoff show? And who else was expecting Xavin to show up for the final battle?
