Talar Salt Flat. A sea of colors.

Located in the region of Antofagasta, on the northern limit of the Puna de Atacama, one can find the Salar de Talar.

At 3,950 meters above sea level, this salt flat is part of a large complex of salt lakes and salt flats around the Salar de Atacama. Among its neighbors, we can name the Miscanti Lagoon, the Tuyajto Lagoon, and the Salar de Capur basin.

Its extension is 46 square kilometers and its hydrographic basin covers 476 square kilometers.

Among its attractions, we can highlight the extraordinary shades of gray and brown that contrast with the deep white of its crystallized surface, product of evaporation.

In the surroundings of the salt flat, you can discover some colorful lagoons that grow from the salt lake's small drains and that are deployed in an area of 2 to 3 square kilometers.

With respect to its panoramic view, in this place you can take excellent photographs with the Caichinque volcano and the Cerro Médano rising in the background.

The climate in the sector is arid and rainfall does not exceed 150 mm. With an average temperature of 1º c, in this place only cespitose grasses and some microalgae that serve as food for flamingos, caitís, suris, and other birds grow. If you are lucky you can also see lizards and foxes.
