Grouping trees together makes them more resistant to hurricanes according to a University of Florida study. The study found that 80% of grouped trees survived Hurricane Ivan compared to 70% of individual trees, and 88% survived Hurricane Jeanne versus 78% of individual trees. Certain species are also more resilient, including dogwood, live oak, American holly, and Florida thatch. Native trees had a better survival rate than exotic trees. Climate change is predicted to increase the intensity and frequency of hurricanes due to warmer ocean temperatures.
