On Monday, a mere four episodes away from the series finale of Rizzoli & Isles, we learned that Maura once had herself a husband named Edward and a mother-in-law, played by JoBeth Williams, who continued to have some serious separation anxiety issues in regard to her totally grown son. As one of the show’s followers aptly stated on Twitter, “If my best friend didn’t tell me she was married, I would be super pissed.” (For real.) But the fact that Jane didn’t know about Maura’s previous marriage wasn’t even the least believable thing about this episode.

Apparently Edward and Maura met in college, his mother hated her, they got married in Las Vegas one weekend on a whim and then got divorced. Just kidding, though — they didn’t actually get divorced, because only Maura signed the papers. As of Edward getting shot because someone in a Ponzi scheme tried to target him and his father, we found out that he still carried a picture of Maura in his wallet. There was no part of me in the entire 45 minutes of the episode that didn’t believe that these two were going to give their allegedly long-dead romance another shot, so you can imagine my reaction when, at the end of the show, he walked her to her door, she invited him in, and… surprise! There was a party thrown by Jane, at which Maura and Edward signed the divorce papers in front of everyone, ate cake and wrapped it all up.

I’m not convinced that this Edward character is gone from our lives forever. I know there’s a hoard of Jane/Maura shippers out there who will want to murder me for this, but I wouldn’t be miserable if Maura and Edward ended up together or even if Edward just stuck around to chill for a while; they did seem to have a great deal of affection for each other in the brief time we saw them on screen. Another thing I’m not convinced of: that even a “wild and crazy” version of Maura Isles would marry a dude in Vegas and that she wouldn’t be fastidious enough to make sure the divorce had actually happened. (Yes, I understand the concept of willing suspension of disbelief, but I think that’s asking a lot of people who have watched this show for all seven seasons.)
Also in this episode, Jane decided she’s taking that job teaching at the FBI Academy, and Maura was predictably supportive of her choice, but I can’t be the only one who thought the way the episode ended — with the two of them toasting to change — felt a little… empty. Are they going to end up in D.C. together or what? I continue to suspect that what seems like clear indications of how this show will end is actually just the writers baiting us into thinking we know what’s going to happen before they pull a super switch on us in the last episodes.
