Bevezető
Egyedülálló kiadványt tart kezében a kedves Olvasó, mert ismereteim szerint ez az első, mely
a magyar dísznövényfajtákat gyűjtötte egybe.
Magyar dísznövény fajták? A gazdálkodó ember ebbe a két csoportba sorolta be a növényeket,
haszonnövények és dísznövények. A haszonnövények csoportjába azok tartoztak melyek ehetők,
ihatók vagy étel és ital készíthető belőle. A dísznövények csoportjába tartoztak azok a növények,
A városi fák a városlakók életfeltételeit biztosítják.
Nézzük meg mi a fajta? Vitán felül olyan faj alatti rendszertani egység, mely egy-két tulajdonság-
ban eltér az alapfajétól, például a Fraxinus ornus ’Mecsek’ szép, szabályos, gömb koronát nevel
a virágos kőrishez képest.

Introduction
Dear Reader, or who is flipping this booklet, you are holding in your hand a unique publication,
which contains only a few words and perhaps no sentences at all.
Hungarian ornamental plants? Agrestians classified plants into two classes, useful plants and
ornamental plants. Edible, drinkable plants or those with which food or drink can be made were
classified as useful plants. And of course, medicinal plants were included in that class, too. The class
of ornamental plants included plants which, in addition to their beauty, had no other benefits to
human. Nowadays, as more and more people live in continuously growing cities and as the weather
keeps getting warmer, plants making cities liveable need to be put from the class of ornamental
plants into the class of useful plants. Trees in cities ensure the living conditions of city dwellers.
Let’s see what “breed” means? Beyond question, breed is a taxonomical unit within species
which differs from the species in some characteristics, for instance, Fraxinus Ornus “Mecsek”, in
comparison with Fraxinus Ornus, has a nice, even, spherical tree crown. Of course, the breed is
able to transmit these special traits to the offspring.
Why is Hungarian origin important? Reference is usually made to the country of the breeder.
This is also the case with the German Shepherd or the Scottish Shepherd and so is the case with
ornamental
plants. And that is the case with the ornamental plant breeds originating from Hungary. Here, in
the Carpathian Basin, where it is a little warmer in summer and a little colder in winter, Hungarian-
bred ornamental plants feel comfortable.
Every nation has its own garden culture! National breeds constitute a significant part of every
national garden culture.
This Publication presents what is in one of the treasure chests of the nation speaking Hungarian.

Preface
The newest volume of our series of agricultural publications, “The Hungarian-bred Ornamental The Chamber and the inter-professional association also concluded a cooperation agreement
Trees, Ornamental Shrubs and Evergreens” collects and presents the Hungarian breeds to confirm their joint work, and in the recent past, we multiple times raised our voice for the
with pictures and short descriptions. The photos speak for themselves and why would survival of the domestic ornamental plant sector, which provides livelihood for thousands
it be any different since this volume presents such plants in full flush that are primarily of Hungarian families. During the state of danger relating to the coronavirus pandemic in
cultivated and widely used in public spaces, public parks, public and private gardens due to the first half of 2020, these two organizations lobbied together for the extended opening
their ornamental values and environmental benefits. hours of ornamental plant shops, and we asked the local governments and mayors to use
the services and products of the domestic ornamental gardeners for designing public spaces
The environmental benefits of ornamental plants, ornamental trees are gaining more and and public parks and beautifying them by planting flowers. The ornamental plant trade has
more attention. High-quality, well-groomed green spaces have a significant impact on the two pillars: use for private and public purposes and, let me express it elegantly, the two of
quality of life, daily activities, work and health of people living in cities and settlements. them together are able to make the sector flourishing.
In connection with this, it can be said that the ornamental nursery products of ornamental
gardeners and the green surface services of ornamental gardeners play a significant role We hope that with our publication we can promote the selection and use of high-quality,
in the field of public health. It is not without reason that today the modern green surface Hungarian-bred breeds that are suitable for the Hungarian climate and provide high per-
developments related to large investments count on the environmental benefits, ecolog- formance.
ical services, economic significance and climate control ability of ornamental plants and
ornamental trees.
With regard to that, designers and customers are responsible for using breeds in modern
and professional way. It is a bad practice to procure plants quickly and from cheap imports.
Ornamental trees and ornamental shrubs, which are difficult to adapt to the domestic cli-
mate, cannot fulfil their blessed activity mentioned above. Trees in harsh conditions need
to be replaced in short time. On the one hand, it results in additional costs and problems,
and on the other hand, it causes disadvantages and a loss of income to Hungarian nurs-
ery-gardeners. Not to mention the unpredictability of the customers’ demand.
In Hungary, the willingness to buy ornamental plants is high. People like beautifying their
home environment, planting and nursing ornamental trees and ornamental shrubs that
are fascinating with their thousands of colours, have exuberant tree crowns and provide
cooling shade and nice micro climate. That is why the Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture,
together with the Hungarian Ornamental Horticulturist Association, support the promotion
and spread of the Hungarian-bred ornamental trees, ornamental shrubs and pines. In this Balázs Győrffy László Orlóci
spirit, we started a nationwide professional road show where we continuously introduce President President
Hungarian-bred ornamental trees, ornamental shrubs and their advantages to the experts of Hungarian Chamber of Agriculture Hungarian Ornamental
local governments. At the events, we also emphasize the importance of choosing domestic Horticulturist Association
products and this publication supports our intention.

1. Lombos fák és cserjék
Deciduous trees and shrubs
A lombos magyar dísznövényfajták lehetnek
a települések zöldfelületén a jövő reménységei. Különlegesen sok magyar berkenye- és
hárs fajta született a nemesítők keze alatt. Talán a lista legismertebb, világhírt szerzett
növénye a virágos kőris gömb változata (Fraxinus ornus ’Mecsek’).
Most of the plants planted in gardens and parks are deciduous, just like the natural vegetation
of our country. These plants can be prepared for the harsher urban conditions and, what is
even harder, to place along the roads. The deciduous Hungarian ornamental plant varieties can
be the hopes of the future on the green surface of the settlements. Particularly high number of
Hungarian rowan (Sorbus) and linden (Tilia) varieties were born under the hands of plant bree-
ders. Maybe the most well-known, world-famous plant on the list is the spherical version of the
manna ash (Fraxinus ornus ’Mecsek’).

Evergreen
In Hungary, in the Danube-Tisza valley, there are few pine species, we can count them on one
hand. Most of them are rather planted in gardens or parks. But perhaps that is why Hungarian
pine varieties are more interesting and special. We can find among them varieties which are
known beyond our borders. Such is certainly the Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ’Silver Globus’ and
the Larix decidua ’Puli’.
