      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Bearing little resemblance to the beloved procedural it presumes to reboot, Young Wallander is dispiritingly unenlightening as a prequel and merely functional as a drama in its own right.

Lukas-Jeremie K The young policeman Kurt Wallander (Adam Pålsson) has to find his way in the increasingly brutal environment of the Swedish city of Malmö. Bored with his job as a simple patrolman, he actually prefers to switch to the criminal police immediately to solve exciting cases. When one day he fails to protect a teenager from a horrific attack, a turning point in his private and professional career is imminent. "Young Wallander" brings along a reasonably interesting story and the main actor does his job quite well, but that's about it. If you don't expect much, you won't be disappointed. It's just one of those typical small town crime series. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/09/23 Full Review Davy e J Not bad, worth watching. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/19/22 Full Review Audience Member Good series. Great plot, well written. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member I dont know why people are rating this down just because it isn't what they expected or they are disappointed because of their love for the original series. This is not that, but it is a great show in it's own right. I love the everything about it and I consider it a better show. The cinematography is far more interesting. The show has an edge that the original did not. Adam Palsson is riveting. It is hard to take your eyes off him. He creates such depth to the character, but does it in very subtle ways. The character development is slow, but methodical. It gives you just enough to care, but holds enough back to make you want to find out more. I thoroughly enjoy the show and hope for more seasons. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Audience Member After the excellent Money Heist I tried Young Wallander being a fan of The Original series with Kristen Henriksson….and it's OK. Slightly bluntly patronising and ultimately annoying is the inherent lefty virtue signalling and woke issue agenda outbursts that pervades the show and most cop dramas nowadays wether in Swedish or English at any cost and usually to the detrimental plausibility/flow of the script/storyline. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/09/23 Full Review Film R Slow building and expertly crafted. Its always hard for a show to invent a new chapter off an old favorite. I have hated a few myself-I like this one. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/21/22 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Brad Newsome Sydney Morning Herald Watchable, if a bit conventional. Nov 19, 2020 Full Review Chris Bennion Daily Telegraph (UK) All of this could be forgiven if Young Wallander worked as a drama in its own right, but it's so inept that one can only assume these decisions form some sort of elaborate marketing strategy by Netflix. Rated: 1/5 Sep 8, 2020 Full Review Ellen E Jones Guardian Young Wallander ticks off its lead's familiar attributes in checklist fashion, rarely pausing to offer more developed hints at psychological cause and correlation. Rated: 3/5 Sep 8, 2020 Full Review Beth Webb NME (New Musical Express) With a meaty budget and solid Scandi-noir foundation to build upon, Young Wallander proves a slickly-executed thriller. Rated: 3/5 Jul 8, 2021 Full Review Ángel S. Harguindey El Pais (Spain) The series is fine, formally functional, without ever reaching the degree of excellence achieved by the splendid Kenneth Branagh's excellent British Wallander.
