D P Hilarious! Mr. Bean in his prime. Loved it. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/04/23 Full Review Audience Member The first entry in the Black Adder saga is very enjoyable but decidedly inferior to the sheer brilliance of the other three: this Black Adder is essentially a clueless, slimy moron, a differentiation that does make for several great moments but without matching the non-stop hilarity of his later incarnations. Still, the show boasts an excellent cast and hints more than once at the genius in the making: the characters gel more and more and the humour at times shows shades of vitriolic subversion. Kate Kulzick AV Club Pilots are hard to get right, particularly comedy pilots, so it's not surprising that "The Foretelling" is among the series' most uneven episodes. Rated: C+ Nov 27, 2018 Full Review Bill Gibron PopMatters There is just something so amazingly awful, so delightfully despicable about the man that you can't help but hang on his every wicked wisecrack and/or deed. Sep 30, 2020 Full Review Christel Loar PopMatters Though the writing was strong and the verbal interplay was there, the first series made the mistake of abundance, with Edmund Blackadder too bumbling, the cast too abounding and the sets too sprawling. Nov 29, 2018 Full Review Adam Sloman Den of Geek Most of the jokes fall flat and there's no real wit of spark to the characters. Nov 28, 2018 Full Review Nick Venable CinemaBlend It's definitely the writing and varying plateaus of verbal trickery used, even without the novel historical hook, that make Black Adder stand out. Rated: 3/5 Nov 28, 2018 Full Review Andrew Lewis Screen Rant It's rare that a hist0ory-based comedy is genuinely funny, and in that sense Blackadder is a true diamond in the rough.
