The Santa Lucia Foundation IRCCS

The Santa Lucia Foundation of Rome is a Scientific Institute for Research, Hospitalization and Healthcare (IRCCS), specialized in the fields of neuro-motor rehabilitation and neurosciences. Its Hospital is equipped with 325 beds and provides highly-specialized neurorehabilitation services covered by the Italian National Health Service. All clinical activity is strictly coordinated to research activities. There are 60 laboratories – within 5 Research Lines – located in the Hospital building and in the nearby European Center for Brain Research (CERC).

Neurosciences and Highly-specialized Neurorehabilitation

The Foundation’s healthcare and research activities focus on patients recovering from severe brain injuries with the aim of reestablishing independence through the recovery of complex functions like mobility, memory, attention, language, breathing and swallowing. The Hospital is equipped with multi-disciplinary medical teams with physicians specialized in different areas, physiotherapists, speech therapists and specialized nurses. In compliance with the Ministry of Health Decree of 29.01.1992, the Foundation treats patients with severe acquired brain injury as the result of cerebral stroke and coma, patients with spinal cord lesions, and patients suffering from neurodegenerative diseases (particularly multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease). The Foundation also provides long-term neurorehabilitation treatments for children with congenital cerebral palsy, mental disability and rare genetic syndromes.

IRCCS : RESEARCH GUARANTEES QUALITY

Since 1992, the Santa Lucia Foundation has been granted recognition by the Ministry of Health as an IRCCS. Its annual scientific production reaches 2,000 Impact Factor points and 450 publications, positioning itself among the top neuroscientific Centers. The Institute also coordinates the clinical and research Platform for the Genomics and Proteomics of Neurological Diseases within the IRCCS network of Neurosciences and Neurohabilitation.

THE COMMITMENT TO TRAINING

Together with the University of Rome Tor Vergata, the Foundation currently offers Bachelor Degree courses in Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy and Nursing. It is a public recognized Provider for Continuing Medical Education and houses the Residency in Neuropyschology of the University of Rome Sapienza. In addition, it has agreements in place with other Residency Schools of several universities.
