A moderate to large conifer native to New Zealand, where it is found in forests up to 800 m (2600 ft.) on the North Island and the northern end of the South Island. The actual leaves of mature plants are reduced to tiny scales. The function of leaves is instead filled by flattened shoots called phylloclades, which in this species are pinnate and reminiscent of a celery leaf. This unusual conifer is a nice ornamental for most warm temperate areas and its wood is prized for its flexibility as well as its durability.
