The world's only parasitic gymnosperm, this exceedingly rare and bizarre conifer forms a small shrub with purple, scale-like leaves. It is a holoparasite and grows on the roots of Falcatifolium taxoides. Both conifers are endemic to the islands of New Caledonia. In lack of Falcatifolium, Parasitaxus usta might also be able to grow on other Podocarpaceae.
