A large conifer to 40 m tall with a trunk to 2 m in diameter, native to western China and Taiwan, where it grows in mixed deciduous or evergreen forests to about 2000 m elevation. Its wood is soft and mostly used for construction. In cultivation is is suitable for USDA hardiness Zones 7 to 11 but needs warm summers to flourish. Seeds may benefit from cold stratification for a month.
