Autograph note signed by the creator of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. On Doyle’s Windlesham house letterhead, the note reads, “I am sorry I have no photo. Many thanks for yours – also for the charming verses A Conan Doyle.” In near fine condition. Double matted and framed with a portrait of Doyle from a 1927 painting by H. Gates. The entire piece measures 10 inches by 12.75 inches.

British writer and physician Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle first created the character Sherlock Holmes, for which he is best known, in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. Widely considered milestones in the field of crime fiction, the three other novels in the canon include The Sign of the Four, The Hound of the Baskervilles, and The Valley of Fear. A prolific writer; other than Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction and historical novels.
