ANCIENT EGYPT: CARTOUCHE AND SHEN RING

In Egyptian hieroglyphs, a cartouche is an oval with a line at one end: it indicated that the text enclosed is a royal name. The Ancient Egyptian word for it was shenu, and it was essentially an expanded shen ring. The shen ring, a circle with a line tangent to it, represented eternal protection; it is most often seen carried by the falcon god Horus, but was also carried by the vulture goddess Nekhbet
