Contemporary Oiran. Oiran came to power in the Edo period, replacing Tayū as the highest rank of courtesan; this system was later abolished & after that all floating world women were known as Oiran. Like Tayū they were part of the pleasure quarters (water trade) , but like Geisha, were schooled in the arts of chadō, music & ikebana. The last official Oiran was recorded in 1761; contemporaries who still practice the arts of the Oiran do so as cultural preservationists; not as a profession.
