Identification & Behavior: ~34 cm (13.3 in). The Orange-breasted Falcon has a blackish head and rest of the upperparts. The throat, upper breast and sides of the neck are pale rufous to rufous. The vest-like belly is black with white barring. The lower belly, thighs and vent areas are chestnut. The legs are yellowish.  It is similar to the smaller Bat Falcon but is distinguished by larger size, larger feet, and generally more rufous/orange upperbreast and sides of the neck.

Status: The Orange-breasted Falcon is widespread but rare in Amazonia where it is known to range up to 800 m along the foothill of the Andes. Juvenile birds have been observed at elevations of up to 3000 m. It also occurs in Co, Ec, Br, and Bo.

Name in Spanish: Halcón de Pecho Naranja.

Sub-species: Orange-breasted Falcon (Falco deiroleucus), Temminck 1825.

Meaning of Name: Falco: Gr. phalkön= falcon. deiroleucus: Gr. Deire= throat and leukos= white.
