Undulated Antpitta (Grallaria squamigera)

Identification & Behavior: ~21 cm (8.3 in). The Undulated Antpitta has gray upperparts. The underparts are orange/rufous with large black specks that may show an undulated effect. It often shows a pale mustachial streak. It often forages on the forest floor near forest edges and also in isolated patches of humid Andean scrub. It is large and unique in its high elevation range. Status: The Undulated Antpitta is uncommon on the east slope of the Andes where it is found at elevations ranging between 2100 m to 3500 m. This antpitta also occurs on the west slope of the Andes in Cajamarca; extreme northern Peru. It also occurs in Co, Ec, and Bo.

Sub-species: Undulated Antpitta (Grallaria squamigera canicauda) Chapman, 1926.

Meaning of Name: Grallaria: L. grallarius, grallae= one walking on stilts. squamigera: L. squamiger= scale bearing, scaly.
