Colchicum

Colchicum owes its names 'autumn crocus, meadow saffron and naked lady' to the frequent appearance of flowers in autumn, followed by leaves and fruit in spring and early summer. The spring- and autumn-flowering tuberous plant likes a slightly shaded location, for instance as an undergrowth of deciduous shrubs on somewhat moist but well-drained soil. The name Colchicum is derived from one of its original locations, namely the region of Colchis in Asia, where the mythological poisoner Medea lived. They are also found in Iran, Turkestan and in large parts of Europe. It has been known for centuries that autumn crocus contains, among other things, the alkaloid colchicine used in medicine. Colchicum (especially the larger sizes) is suitable for indoor flowering. What was previously offered under Merendera is now found under Colchicum.
