Officially Extinct in 2012
Chelonoidis niger abingdonii, also known as the Pinta Island tortoise or Abingdon Island tortoise, was a subspecies of the Galapagos tortoise native to the island of Pinta in the Galapagos archipelago.
It was famously the last surviving member of its subspecies, and the most well-known individual was a male named Lonesome George.
Unfortunately, Lonesome George passed away in 2012, marking the extinction of the Pinta Island tortoise subspecies.
The loss of the Pinta Island tortoise underscores the importance of conservation efforts to protect endangered species from extinction.
