“There came a time near dawn on the eve of spring, and Lúthien danced upon a green hill; and suddenly she began to sing…and the song of Lúthien released the bonds of winter, and the frozen waters spoke, and flowers sprang from the cold earth where her feet had passed. Then the spell of silence fell from Beren, and he called to her, crying Tinúviel; and the woods echoed the name.” - The Silmarillion, Chapter XIX: Of Beren and Lúthien

It is hard to compete with Of the Voyage of Eärendil for most epic journey in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion, and yet, Of Beren and Lúthien is a fan favorite for countless reasons. There is true love that overcomes even death, there is a magnificent hidden kingdom of elves under a Maiar’s enchantment of protection, there’s an elf princess confined to a tree house, a marvelous hound who can speak, an enemy of surpassing dread, there is dance, and song and heartbreak and joy! The Grimms would have given all they had to hear such a tale!

And yet, my own greatest love for the wonder tale of Beren and Lúthien comes from two sources from the borders of the First Age saga. The first is the fact that Aragorn sings a version of it to the little hobbits in The Fellowship of the Ring at the outset of their journey with him, to comfort them in the dark of a perilous night. We come to learn of the special significance of the ancient song to Aragorn, following in the footsteps of mortal Beren in falling in love with an immortal elf. I believe the story must have held comfort for Aragorn, too, because it enshrined the possibility of hope and a life together with his beloved.

And then there is the even tenderer knowledge that J.R.R. Tolkien had his common grave with his wife, Edith Bratt Tolkien, inscribed with the names of Beren and Lúthien. Millions have made a pilgrimage to this site and many have wept at the deeply personal and touching epitaph. Biographies and letters can only hint at the many struggles Ronald and Edith overcame to arrive at their wedding day, and the mutual devotion that then filled their life together is epic in its own way in a confused Age like our own.

Tolkien was profoundly inspired by Edith, and how she had once danced for him in a green wood, and the tales he told us from his deep fund of beauty are brilliant. Lúthien singing like a nightingale, dancing and bringing the spring with her. Grieved and heartsick Beren, stricken speechless at the sight of her. The dire quest of the Silmaril. The song that brings them back from death to a shared old age of retirement on a quiet island. Unforgettable!
