EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving showcases the captivating beauty of the Dot-eared Coquette, Lophornis gouldii, also known as Gould's Hummingbird. The Vulnerable species, with the scientific name Trochilus gouldii, is a mesmerizing hummingbird native to the tropical rainforests of South America. The intricate details of this illustration, taken from Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Ornithology, Volume 2, published in Edinburgh by W.H. Lizars in 1833, reveal the Dot-eared Coquette's distinctive features. The male is depicted with a glossy green back, a vibrant orange-red gorget, and prominent white ear spots. The female, on the other hand, has a duller appearance with a greenish-brown back and a white belly. The Dot-eared Coquette is a small hummingbird, measuring only about 3 inches (7.6 cm) in length. They are known for their agility and have the ability to hover in mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings 53 times per second. These hummingbirds feed primarily on nectar from flowers, but they also consume small insects for protein. Sadly, the Dot-eared Coquette is considered Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss and fragmentation, as well as hunting for the pet trade. Their small population size and restricted range make them a species of concern, and efforts are being made to protect their habitat and promote conservation initiatives. This stunning illustration not only serves as a testament to the natural beauty of the Dot-eared Coquette but also highlights the importance of preserving the delicate balance of ecosystems that support these remarkable creatures.
