GOBLIN SHARK The Goblin Shark (Mitsukurina owstoni) is a rare and fascinating species of deep-sea shark that belongs to the family Mitsukurinidae. Often referred to as a "living fossil," the Goblin Shark is unique in both its appearance and evolutionary history. Goblin Sharks are easily distinguishable by their unusual appearance. They have a distinctive long, flat snout that resembles a sword, which is lined with nail-like teeth. Their skin is soft and flabby, usually pinkish-grey in colour, and their large, protruding jaws give them a menacing look. They have small, rudimentary eyes and are well adapted to their deep-sea environment where light is scarce. These enigmatic sharks are primarily found in deep ocean waters, ranging from 200 meters to 1,200 meters (660 to 3,940 feet) below the surface. Goblin Sharks are opportunistic predators, feeding primarily on teleost fishes, cephalopods, and crustaceans. Using their remarkable ability to protrude their jaws, they can quickly snatch prey in the dark depths of the ocean. Their elongated snout and specialised electroreceptors on their rostrum help them detect the electric fields generated by their prey, aiding them in locating food in the pitch-black waters. #goblinshark #shark #matildabishop #savethesharks #educationforconservation #drawing #illustrator

A Sand Tiger Shark unveiled its formidable set of razor-sharp teeth to a diver. This striking behavior is pivotal in understanding the shark's feeding habits. The jaw protrusion is an essential element in their feeding behavior, allowing them to grasp and swallow large prey more efficiently. They have multiple rows of teeth, and as the front teeth become worn or lost during feeding, new teeth from the rows behind them move forward to replace them, ensuring a continuous supply of functional teeth. These sharks help regulate the populations of their prey species, contributing to the overall health and balance of marine ecosystems. This unique insight highlights the intricate adaptations of these majestic creatures, shedding light on the fascinating world of marine biology and the intricacies of apex predators like sand tiger sharks. 🐍 Creature Feature: the Texas Coral Snake (Micrurus tener) This striking snake is known for its vibrant colors and pattern. It has distinct bands of red, yellow, and black that encircle its slender body. The rhyme "Red on yellow, kill a fellow; red on black, venom lack." was created for the coral snake to distinguish it from nonvenomous snakes which look similar, however this should never be solely relied on. These elusive creatures are often found in the southern United States, including Texas. They are common snakes but generally keep to their own. They prefer a variety of habitats, from woodlands to scrublands, where they can hide in leaf litter or burrows. The Texas Coral Snake produces potent neurotoxic venom. While their venom is quite potent, they are usually not aggressive and rarely bite humans. However, if bitten, seek immediate medical attention as their bites can be life-threatening. Fun Facts: 1) They are part of the elapid family, closely related to cobras and mambas. 2) They lay eggs, unlike many other venomous snakes in North America and the incubation time is approx. two months. 3) The common milk snake (Colubrid snake) can easily be confused with the coral snake due to the colors and pattern, which is why the famous rhyme was created. The Texas Coral Snake's colorful warning pattern serves as nature's "Do Not Touch" sign!Remember, when you encounter these beautiful reptiles in the wild, admire them from a safe distance, and let them go about their business. BROWN SHYSHARK 🤎 One of the most distinctive features of the Brown shyshark is its appearance. It has a compact, slender body with a broad, flattened head and large, dark eyes that give it a somewhat cute and endearing look. The dorsal side of its body is typically brownish or greyish, adorned with subtle patterns and sometimes small spots, allowing it to blend seamlessly with the sandy or rocky seabeds where it resides. Feeding primarily on small fish, crustaceans, and cephalopods, this shark species uses its excellent sense of smell and electroreceptors, located on its snout, to detect prey in low light conditions. It employs a stealthy approach, relying on its camouflaged appearance and slow, deliberate movements to capture unsuspecting prey. #brownshyshark #shark #sharkconservation #savethesharks #ocean #oceanconservation
