These are some of our first trees planted in Sierra Leone in 2022 and how much they have grown in just one year. These saplings second wet season has lead to exponential growth - what a difference! Monday series on EU-funded wildfire projects (1/n): We will start kicking off the week with an overview of consortia working on increasing the european landscapes facing an increasing threat of wildfires. This undertaking unites efforts on social, financial and engineering levels as we need to prepare and educate, find sustainable sources of funding and develop novel tools to ensure people and natural assets are safe. The first project we highlight is TREEADS with following mission: "Our mission is to reduce the amount of damage caused by wildfires while maximising the benefits of restoration". The consortium gathers voluntary firefighters such as the Freiwillige Feuerwehr Gumpoldskirchen, research institutes in the fields of forestry such as the Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry, business schools such as the Copenhagen Business School. If you can change your perspective around what logging IS and PROVIDES… It removes many of the uncertainties and anxieties around the activity. Recognizing that what can appear at first as “the end”, as an act of “ultimate destruction”, as something which “cannot be come back from”… And changing that perspective e to that of an act of renewal. It significantly improves moral when moving forward in an “ugly phase” of management… because no matter how I spin it, it’s an ugly activity! But ugly doesn’t equal wrong. Ugly doesn’t equal destructive deforestation. Ugly doesn’t mean the end. Jesus crucifixion is hands down the ugliest way for a person to die if I could ever think of one… and yet the act was a necessary step for humanities ultimate opportunity for salvation. Sometimes it’s simply being able to read the full story and purpose, to be able to keep your eyes on the big picture… and recognize that what can be meant for evil, can ultimately be a catalyst for renewal and good. Not everyone will agree with my methods of teaching. And thats okay! Because those WHO get it… it will provide more comfort, more confidence, more guidance in land management decisions… It will change the mind set around timber harvests and provide peace and clarity when cutting trees off the land. Timber harvests can be done in many different methods, theres not one way fits all method (although there are COMMON methods of operations!) And having a harvest plan not only helps meet many societal demands for wood and timber products, which is a WISE resource, but provides environmental benefifs of diversity across the landscape and financial incentives for families to KEEP the land IN trees! Viewing our harvest operations and other management decisions through the lens of scripture provides the connection often needed to keep moving forward and recognize working the land, active management, is wise and an act of being a good steward of the responsibility we have been handed.
