The 2023 State of Nature report has been published. Using the best data from biological monitoring and recording schemes, this report is able to provide a benchmark for the status of the UK's wildlife. We now know that 1 in 6 species is threatened with extinction in Great Britain. Here's our summary of the marine aspects: 🐟Overall, less is known about the status of species in the seas 🐟Well-monitored fish species living on or near the seafloor have experienced population declines since the 2000s 🐟Grey seal numbers have increased 📈 🐟Harbour seal numbers are decreasing in NE Scotland and SE England 🐟The population size of 13 species of seabird has decreased by an average of 26% since 1986. Habitat corridors, made up of trees and other vegetation, play a vital role in preserving ecosystems and maintaining biodiversity. These pathways allow wildlife to move between habitats, ensuring genetic diversity and preventing local extinction. They also facilitate the dispersal of seeds, pollination, and the spread of beneficial fungi, all of which contribute to a thriving ecosystem. Extinction is a dangerous threat to any living organism. It causes an imbalance in the biosphere and ruptures the natural food chain order. So many beautiful creatures from the past were forever lost to human activities and natural disasters. Learning about extinct exotic animals is different to observing the last of an endangered species. It is extremely depressing because their existence will be wiped off the planet eternally, and there won’t be any way to revive the population back. Habitat loss, climate change, hunting, deforestation, wildfires, inbreeding, etc. are some of the main reasons for animal extinction.
