Abies nordmanniana

Nordman Fir

This is a dense, pyramidal evergreen that typically branchs to the ground. It has glossy dark green needles with a whitish color underneath. Bark is charcoal gray while the cones are dark reddish-brown and appear upright on the branches. 

 

Specimen fir for the landscape. Ornamental yard tree. Popular commercially grown Christmas tree.

Cedrus atlantica 'Glauca'

Blue Atlas cedar

Bold, pyramidal form with sparkling silvery-blue foliage. One of the most popular evergreen conifers.

 

A spectacular specimen for large landscape areas.

Size: Slow grower 40 to 50 ft tall, 20 to 25 ft wide. Larger with age

Cedrus atlantica 'Glauca Fastigiata'

Columnar Blue Atlas Cedar

Densely spaced, upward facing branches form a symmetrical columnar specimen for lining drives or as an accent in shrub beds. Narrow spread allows it to be used in areas with limited space. A beautiful

evergreen.

Cedrus atlantica 'Glauca Pendula'

Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar

A dramatic, drooping form makes this attractive conifer a special addition to any landscape. Use as a large specimen or accent. Pendant branchlets display icy-blue needles.

Ilex attenuata

Foster Holly

Foster holly is an upright, pyramidal habit. The glossy, dark olive evergreen leaves. Small white flowers bloom in late spring. Flowers are followed in fall by an abundant and showy crop of bright red berry-like drupes which persist throughout the winter.

 

Excellent small tree with year-round interest. This has a good specimen value. Incorporate into a foundation planting. It can also be used as a street tree, tall screen, or hedge.

 

Full sun to part shade

Ilex opaca

American Holly (Female)

 

American holly, is an upright, pyramidal, evergreen that easily identified because it is the only native U. S. holly with spiny green leaves and bright red berries. The thick, leathery, deep green leaves have spiny marginal teeth. Bright red or orange fruits ripen in fall on pollinated female trees, and persist on the tree through winter. Birds love the fruit.

 

Can be used as a specimen or grouping. Foundation planting. Foliage provides excellent color for the winter landscape. Berries are attractive and a good winter food source for birds. Can be used in hedges or in woodland gardens.

Ilex x aquipernyi 'Meschick'

Dragon Lady Holly

Dragon Lady Holly is a female cultivar that grows as an upright, symmetrical, very narrow pyramid. The spiny dark evergreen leaves are attractive year round. Scarlet fruits mature in fall and remain on the plant through winter.

 

This plant is often used a hedge or a screen. It is wonderful for a specimen or accent. The  columnar form fits into narrow locations. It helps add color to the winter landscape.

Ilex x 'Nellie R. Stevens'

Nellie R. Stevens Holly

‘Nellie R. Stevens’ typically grows as a large broadleaf evergreen shrub with dense, conical form, but can be trained to grow as a small tree. The oblong, glossy, dark green leaves have spiny margins. Flowers give way to often abundant amounts of berry-like bright red fruits which ripen in fall and persist into winter.

 

This plant can be used as a hedge, screen, windbreak, barrier or border. It is a good specimen and a lovely small tree.

Juniperus chinensis 'Keteleeri'

Keteleeri Juniper

 

This Chinese juniper cultivar is a dense, evergreen, small tree with a pyramidal habit. The light to medium green, mostly scale-like foliage is attractive year-round. A female cultivar that produces profuse, grayish-green, berry-like cones.

 

This plan makes a good specimen. A grouping can be used as an effective screen. Provides good height when incorporated with foundation plantings.

Magnolia grandiflora 'Bracken's Brown Beauty'

Bracken's Brown Beauty Magnolia

Magnolia grandiflora is a broadleaf evergreen tree that is noted for its attractive dark green leaves and its large, extremely fragrant flowers. It typically grows pyramidal to rounded crown. Leathery evergreen oval leaves are glossy dark green above and variable pale green to gray-brown beneath. Fragrant white flowers bloom late spring and usually have six petals.

 

 â€˜Bracken’s Brown Beauty’ is a significant cultivar because, unlike the species, it is reliably winter hardy. It is a compact cultivar with a dense, narrow, pyramdial-oval crown, and produces flowers and leaves that are approximately one-half the size of those on species’ plants. Leathery evergreen leaves are glossy dark green above and rusty-brown beneath, lending a bi-color appearance to the foliage. Fragrant, cup-shaped, white flowers appear in late spring, with sparse continued flowering throughout the summer.

Magnolia grandiflora 'Little Gem'

Little Gem Magnolia

Magnolia grandiflora is a broadleaf evergreen tree that is noted for its attractive dark green leaves and its large, extremely fragrant flowers. It typically grows pyramidal to rounded crown. Leathery evergreen oval leaves are glossy dark green above and variable pale green to gray-brown beneath. Fragrant white flowers bloom late spring and usually have six petals.

 

‘Little Gem’ is a much smaller and slower growing cultivar that typically grows as a compact upright multi-stemmed shrub or small tree to 20’ tall over the first 20 years. It features glossy green leaves that are bronze-brown underneath. Leaves typically drop to the ground in spring as new foliage emerges. Fragrant white flowers bloom in summer.

 

Small evergreen flowering tree is effective in lawns, near decks/patios, as a small street tree or in containers. Also may be grown as a screen or hedge.

Picea abies

Norway Spruce

Norway spruce, is a large pyramidal evergreen conifer, it typically planted in cool and temperate regions of North American. It is noted for its rapid growth. Primary branches are slightly upturned but secondary branches become pendulous as the tree matures. Branches have spirally-arranged, four-sided, needle-like, deep green leaves.

 

An evergreen tree for large lawns, parks or woodland areas. Effective screen or windbreak in cold northern climates. Many dwarf cultivars of this species are available for foundation and rock garden plantings.

Picea abies 'Pendula'

Weeping Norway Spruce

‘Pendula’ is an unusual weeping cultivar of Norway spruce. It is an irregularly shaped evergreen. It generally does not grow upward, but instead will mostly spread along the ground as a woody ground cover, but it can grow upright when staked. The tree has with stiff dark green needles.

 

Weeping evergreen tree that can be trained in a variety of ways for specimen use in the landscape. Use it as a small tree or a ground cover or cascade it over a stone wall.

Size: 4-15 feet tall, 4-15 feet spread at age

Picea omorika

Serbian Spruce

Serbian spruce, is an evergreen conifer that is typically narrow, pyramidal, spire-like tree with pendant branches that ascend at the tips. Flattened bright green needles have silvery undersides. Brown bark cracks into scaly plates. Pendant cones emerge violet purple but mature to yellowish brown.

 

One of the most attractive spruces. Plant as a specimen or in groups. Appropriate as an evergreen street tree.

Size: 40-60 feet tall, 15-20 feet spread at age

Picea orientalis 'Atrovirens'

Oriental Spruce

Oriental spruce is a medium to large, densely-branched, narrow-pyramidal evergreen conifer.  Flattened, glossy dark green needles are shorter than the needles of other species of spruce. Small pollen bearing cones are red. Seed bearing cones are purple maturing to brown. Bark may exfoliate with age.

 

Attractive evergreen tree which can be used as an accent or specimen, but also in foundation plantings or planting screens.

Picea pungens

Colorado Blue Spruce

Colorado spruce (also blue spruce) is a medium to large, narrow, pyramidal conifer with horizontal branching to the ground. Stiff, bristly, four-angled, green to blue-green to silver-blue needles point outward from the branches in all directions. From a horticultural standpoint, trees with blue or silver blue foliage are generally more coveted than trees with green foliage.

 

A great landscape specimen.

Picea pungens 'Fat Albert'

Fat Albert Blue Spruce

This Colorado spruce cultivar is noted for its dense, broad, upright pyramidal shape, closely-spaced, ascending branches and steel blue needle color. Oblong cones are greenish when young, maturing to light brown. 

 

This is an excellent specimen although can be used effectively in groups. A good tree for foundation plantings and borders.

Columnar Blue Spruce

Columnar blue spruce is a medium, narrow, pyramidal conifer with tight upright branching. Stiff, bristly, four-angled, green to blue-green to silver-blue needles point outward from the branches in all directions. From a horticultural standpoint, trees with blue or silver blue foliage are generally more coveted than trees with green foliage.

 

A great landscape specimen.

Pinus flexilis 'Vanderwolf'

Vanderwolf Pine

‘Vanderwolf’s Pyramid’ is an upright, pyramidal tree with closely spaced, twisted, silvery blue green needles. It typically grows slowly. It typically grows tall with a pyramidal habit maturing over time to a more rounded form. 

 

Medium-sized pine for the landscape.

Size: Slow growing to 20 to 25 ft tall, 10 to 15 ft wide.

Pinus parviflora 'Glauca Nana'

Dwarf Japanese White Pine

Dwarf evergreen shrub for sunny areas in the landscape. It is a good as a specimen tree or in small groups. Makes for a good foundation plant. Works well in patio gardens.

Size: 2-3 feet tall, 1-3 feet spread at age

Pinus strobus 'Nana'

Dwarf White Pine

Dwarf white pine is a compact, shrubby, mounded, irregularly branched, spreading, dwarf form of white pine. These plants have silvery blue green needles are soft to the touch. Does not produce cones in early years.

 

This dwarf eastern white pine is effective in rock gardens, as part of a foundation planting or in a shrub border foreground. A good specimen.

Thuja occidentalis 'Dark Green'

Dark Green Arborvitae

Dark green arborvitae is a dense evergreen tree which has a pyramidal form. Scale-like, aromatic, features dark green foliage appears in flattened sprays. Red-brown bark will exfoliate on mature branches and trunks.

 

It can be used as a landscape specimen or an accent. Often used in screens.

Thuja occidentalis 'Degroots Spire'

Degroots Arborvitae

This American arborvitae cultivar is a dwarf, slow-growing, evergreen shrub with an upright, pyramidal habit. Features twisted, scale-like, medium green foliage.

 

It can be used as a specimen or accent plant. It can also be used in shrub borders, hedges or as a foundation plant or even in rock gardens.

Size: 20-30 feet tall, 4-6 feet wide at age

Thuja occidentalis 'Emerald Green'

Emerald Green Arborvitae

Narrow, pyramidal evergreen displaying dense emerald green foliage. Holds its foliage color throughout winter. Excellent medium to large hedge or screening plant.

 

It can be used as a specimen for the lawn or foundation. It can also be used a grouping in lawns or backgrounds. Young trees can be easily pruned as a hedge or screen.

Thuja occidentalis 'Green Giant'

Green Giant Arborvitae

A fast-growing arborvitae hybrid cultivar that is often promoted as a disease-free substitute for Leland cypress, with a dense, narrow, pyramidal habit, but can be easily kept more compact by pruning for screens or hedges. In the proper environment, these can up to 3-4’ of growth per year. 

 

It can be used as a specimen for the lawn or foundation. It can also be used a grouping in lawns or backgrounds. Young trees can be easily pruned as a hedge or screen.

Size: Fast growing to 40-60 feet tall, 12-18 feet wide at age

Tsuga canadensis

Canadian Hemlock

Canadian hemlock, is a dense, pyramidal conifer of the pine family and is noted for having the smallest needles and cones in the genus. Flat sprays of lacy evergreen foliage give this tree a graceful form. Short dark green needles with small, pendant, short-stalked, tan-brown seed-bearing cones. Lower branches often dip toward the ground. Thick and ridged bark on mature trees is red-brown to gray-brown. No part of this tree is poisonous.

 

This is an evergreen conifer for shady areas of the landscape. It can make a nice lawn specimen. Also works well as a screen.

 

Part shade to full shade

Size: 40-70 feet tall, 25-35 feet wide at age

Tsuga canadensis 'Pendula'

Weeping Canadian Hemlock

This Canadian hemlock is a weeping evergreen conifer which assumes many different forms depending on how it is grown and pruned. Flat, dark green needles to with two whitish bands of stomata underneath. Thimble-like, light brown cones to may appear on older plants. No part of this plant is poisonous.

 

It works well as a lawn specimen, grouping, screen, informal hedge, or waterside planting. Some people also use it as a low, mounded rock garden plant when growth is limited.

 

Part shade to full shade

Size: 4-5 feet tall but can get up to 15 feet, 8-10 feet wide at age
