Windy Ridge Bristlecone Pine Scenic Area in Alma, CO

Have you ever seen trees growing horizontally?  Bristlecone Pine Scenic Area is full of them! Windy Ridge sits above the town of Alma at the eastern foot of Mount Bross and has gorgeous 360 degree views. The trees are the most exciting part of this area though. These ancient Rocky Mountain Bristlecone Pines are typically 1,000 to 2,000 years old! They are wind-whipped sculptures created by a combination of nature’s fierce winds and the world’s strongest trees. This is a must-see if you have a half a day to spare. The views are absolutely breathtaking!

Windy ridge is a mellow off-road trail that can be easily reached from Alma. It’s a really fun trail to go on with 4wd, ATV’s, Dirtbikes, or for a nice hike! Lots of people drive most of the way, then choose to hike the last half mile when things get a little bit rougher. Trust me though, it’s worth it when you get to the top and see trees growing sideways due to the constant wind!

The trees are Bristlecone Pines (Pinus aristata.) These are the most durable living entities on this planet! They are highly resilient to harsh weather and bad soils and are known to have achieved lifespans of several thousand years.

The oldest of them can been found in California. Methuselah, which has a verified age of 4,852 years, is the oldest recorded Bristlecone Pine tree on the planet. It can be found in the Inyo National Forest in Eastern California.

From Alma, take Buckskin Gulch Road and head uphill to the west toward Kite Lake and the 14’ers. Follow signs for Windy Ridge Bristlecone Pine Scenic area. You’ll need 4wd or you can hike the last part where the road gets tougher for a low-clearance car.

Top 5 things to do in Alma, Colorado

These 14’ers are close to my home so I have traversed them many times, and from many angles! I have done the trails but have also climbed up the backside of Lincoln from Montgomery reservoir and the backside of Bross from Windy Ridge. These are fun mountains to play on and no matter which peak you’re on the views are quite spectacular! If you start at Kite Lake really early in the morning you can conquer all 4 peaks in one day. I would recommend starting with Bross if you’re going to do this as the scree can be slippery and better for going up than down on that part. Bring lots of water and a jacket in case it’s cold up top, which it almost always is. I don’t recommend this trail for pets, it’s pretty jagged and rough. Click here to learn more!

2. Mosquito Pass Off-Roading ATV Trail

Mosquito Pass is the highest motor-vehicle pass in North America! This is no east feat and having the proper vehicle, handling and clearance is a must! The trail goes from Alma to Leadville, or vice versa. It’s only open in Summer months and it’s a very popular trail. There are also off-shoots all along the main trail where you can discover old mines that are still in tact. There’s nothing that can match the beauty when you’re o top of these mountains, and the best time to go is early summer when there are lots of wildflowers, or in the fall when everything is orange, yellow and crimson. Be sure to look up the trail before you go, pack some food and rinks and have the proper vehicle and equipment!

Have you ever seen trees growing sideways? Windy ridge is a mellow off-road trail that can be easily reached from Alma. It’s a really fun trail to go on with 4wd, ATV’s, Dirtbikes, or for a nice hike! Lots of people drive most of the way, then choose to hike the last half mile when things get a little bit rougher. Trust me though, it’s worth it when you get to the top and see trees growing sideways due to the constant wind! The trees are Bristlecone Pines. These are the strongest and oldest trees on earth, the oldest of them are located in California. This is a must-see if you have a half a day to spare. The views are breathtaking! To learn more and see more pictures, click here!

Montgomery Reservoir is rich with intriguing history and breathtaking views. Whether I’m spending my time next to the reservoir or the beautiful waterfall river that flows into it, I’m surrounded by peace and beauty in every direction. Occasionally I’ll see some wildlife around the area too such as deer, fox, moose, seagulls, fish, chipmunks, marmots and a variety of bigger birds. I rarely see any other people around and when I do they’re usually hundreds of yards away fishing or something. This is a perfect place to meditate, do yoga, read, write, sketch, picnic, hike, fish, or just clear your mind. There is also a perfect trail for off-roading or 4-wheeling that takes you through gorgeous scenic mountains and old mining remnants from Montgomery Reservoir to Wheeler Lake. Magnolia Mill sits next to the river flowing down into the reservoir and is a must-see! Click here to learn more!

5. Hoosier Pass Great Continental Divide

Hoosier Pass is nestled right between Park County and Summit County, Colorado. The pass is part of the Great Continental Divide in Colorado. Sitting at 11,542-feet, Hoosier Pass is part of the Mosquito mountain range and is a popular destination for sight-seeing, hiking, off-roading, snowshoing, snowmobiling, skiing and snoboarding if you’re willing to hike up for it. The pass sits between Alma and Breckenridge and is part of a daily commute for locals. It can be taken as a “back way” for tourists as well, but in the winter it’s not recommended unless you have the proper vehicle and snow tires as it can get pretty sketchy at times. Traction laws are almost always in place for this pass in thewinter.

Alma Colorado's Rich Mining History

Alma, Colorado was established in 1872 after The Boston Colorado Smelting Company and the Fanny Barrett Smelting Company both set up smelting operations in the area. Many hard rock mines were opened on Mt. Bross, Mt. Democrat and Mt. Lincoln. Gold was first discovered in the area of Buckskin Gulch. The camps became very populated and the employees began to petition Park County to establish a town. Alma, named after the grocery store owner’s daughter, held its first “Town” meeting on December 4, 1873.

The town of Alma was initially a camp devoted to the dredge and hydraulic gold mines of Placer Valley. While in search of gold, in 1879 and 1880, significant silver deposits were discovered instead. This gave the town of Alma a prosperous mining economy for decades Nowadays, Alma, Colorado comprises of 17,440 nearby active and inactive mines! Click here to learn more about Alma’s rich history.

The historic Sweet Home Mine in Alma used to produce silver, but now it produces a gorgeous rhodochrosite, a rose-red colored manganese carbonate mineral. Rhodochrosite specimens are among the most desirable of all mineral species. The world’s finest specimen, known as “Alma King,” was discovered here.

The London Mine near Alma was one of the state’s richest and longest-lived gold mines sitting at 11,499 Feet and producing gold, silver, lead ad copper. The mine was in operation from 1875 to 1942 when it was closed during World War II. Unfortunately, on March 23, 1937, most the historic business district was destroyed by fire.

Paris Mill, located just outside of the town of Alma towards Kite Lake and the 14’er, was successful in finding Gold, Lead and Silver. The Paris Mill was built in 1895 with the primary purpose of milling ore that was mined at the Paris Mine on Mount Bross. The Paris mine opened in 1883.

The remains of the Orphan Boy Mine, part of the Mosquito Mining District, can be found a couple miles outside of Alma, (2.13 miles away.) The mine was founded in 1861 and produced gold, silver, copper, lead, and zinc.

The remains of the old town of Montgomery are now located at the bottom of Montgomery Reservoir. Magnolia Mine sits right next to the reservoir and was one of 6 gold mills that processed ore from many mines located in the area.

The Dolly Varden Mine is a underground mining operation located on the Eastern slope of Mt. Bross, near Alma. It was first discovered in 1881 and mostly produced Copper, Gold, Silver, Zinc and Lead.

"The Town of Alma is a true community. The citizens of not only the town but of the surrounding sub-divisions, including Placer Valley, join together many times a year to celebrate the joy of living in a small mountain community. Everyone is accepted as long as he accepts all in return. The town, even though it was named for an individual, truly can relate to the Spanish definition of alma meaning soul."

Altitude Sickness at Higher Elevations

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is very common. The symptoms occur when a person walks, hikes or drives to a higher elevation from sea level too quickly. It feels similar to that of a hangover and usually causes dizziness, headaches, muscle aches, fatigue, shortness of breath, difficulty sleeping and nausea. Usually these experiences will happen when you reach 8,000 feet or more.

High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE)

High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) is a buildup of fluid in the lungs. This can be extremely dangerous and even life threatening. In extreme cases you could experience an inability to walk, confusion, a persistent cough producing frothy substance, shortness of breath even when resting and even coma. If you feel like your symptoms are getting worse instead of adjusting accordingly, you might need to seek immediate medical attention as well as getting to a lower altitude as soon as possible.

Anyone Can Get Altitude Sickness

You may think that you’re insusceptible to AMS and HAPE if you’re in great shape or eat healthy, but that’s actually not the case. Even pro athletes and nutritionists can be affected. The main factors are usually based on factors like elevation and how soon you reached that elevation. There area also other variables such as lung and heart conditions that may come into play, but not always.

Acclimation Takes Time

When it comes to altitude, take it slow. Acclimation takes time and can not be rushed. Usually it takes 2-3 days to fully acclimate, depending on various factors. Move up to higher elevations gradually to acclimate without issues. You’ll definitely need to drink plenty of water and eat lots of carbs! Alcohol, weed, tobacco and most medications should be avoided. Talk to your doctor if you aren’t sure about the effects that altitude can have on your medical condition or the medications you’re taking. If you have a heart or lung condition, you’ll want to take extra cautions and pay attention to signs and symptoms that may develop as you travel to higher elevations.

What Can You Do?

If you’re feeling sick, avoid exercising, smoking, drinking alcohol, taking unnecessary medications, and don’t go higher for another 24-48 hours. There are ways to feel better if you’re already feeling awful. Try oxygen bars, water, carbs, ibuprofen, anti-nausea medications, vitamin C, E, magnesium, electrolytes and Alpha Lipoic Acid. Hopefully this information is helpful, please seek medical attention if your symptoms are worsening!

Best Altitude Sickness Supplements

Acli-Mate is an Altitude & Energy Aid in the form of a Mountain Sport Drink that is Vegan; Gluten and Nut-free.

Zaca Recovery Chewable is a vegan & gluten free chewable supplement that helps with altitude, hangovers & travel.

Boost Oxygen provides a portable oxygen canister, 95% supplemental breathing oxygen, 100% natural, lightweight.

If you are experiencing symptoms of altitude sickness that are getting worse instead of adjusting accordingly, you might need to seek immediate medical attention as well as getting to a lower altitude as soon as possible.

About Me

I’m very passionate about a healthy lifestyle and the foods needed to maintain that. I go to different farms all over the state to find the best that Colorado has to offer and bring it up to the rocky mountains. This is a lot of work, but very rewarding when I’m sinking my teeth into heavenly fruits and vegetables that can’t be found in the local grocery stores. My hope is to continue providing healthy alternatives to a lot of the bad food that’s being consumed in America. When people taste the difference in farm fresh produce, they might just change their outlook on certain fruits and vegetables that they thought they didn’t like. This was the case for me. I used to think I hated a lot of fruits and vegetables until I tasted them in their true, unaltered form. Picked at their peak ripeness, these fruits and veggies are full of flavor and nutrition. When you buy at most grocery stores, those fruits and veggies were picked early to last longer, thus compromising the potential of both tastiness and full nutritional content. If you’re going to be smart and eat your fruits and veggies, wouldn’t you rather them taste good and give you all the nutrients your body needs? I sure would! I also make jams, preserves, trail mixes and spices.. derived from locally sourced farms and full of flavor to last you through those long winter months when things just don’t grow here in Colorado! Please do your taste-buds a “flavor” and stop on by!

In my free time, I really enjoy everything that the outdoors have to offer!

Keystone Night Skiing

Night riding in Keystone is pretty much my favorite thing ever! At Keystone, the ski day doesn’t end just because the sun is setting. Keystone offers the longest ski day in the state of Colorado, with multiple lighted trails to enjoy under the twinkling nighttime sky. Keystone is open until 8pm most nights of the week. On these days, I usually get out there in the afternoon, do a few runs, then watch breathtaking sunsets from the top of Dercum Mountain. The mountain reaches a height of 11,640 feet, making it the perfect scenic viewpoint for Lake Dillon and the sun setting over it. As the sun descends behind the mountains, it produces an incredibly gorgeous and colorful alpenglow on the circumjacent mountains. When the sun finally gives way to the nighttime sky, it gets pretty dark out. It seems like a scary thing to ski when it’s so dark out, but the snow stays lit up very well from the bright lights that are shining down on it. On a clear night, you can see a vast number of twinkling stars above! On Saturday nights, they even have fireworks! It’s always such a magical experience at Keystone, and night riding is something you must experience if you have the opportunity.

Springtime Snowboarding & Skiing

In the spring time the sun doesn’t go down until between 7pm and 8pm so night riding essentially becomes a really long day of “day-riding” but still comes with the magical sunset at the end. There’s nothing like tailgating and riding with friends on a long warm spring day then topping it all off with a gorgeous sunset. Night time is a fun time to play around since there’s hardly anyone around to get in your way or throw off your groove. It’s also a great time for beginners to learn or practice without people whizzing around them. The best part of night riding, other than the gorgeous sunset, is having the place to yourself. There aren’t many people that go night riding so on many occasions, you’ll find yourself on an entire run alone. It’s ahhhhmazing!!

Is night skiing cold and icy?

When the sun goes drops behind the mountains, the temperature drops with it! Be sure to bundle up! It also can get pretty icy sometimes but that’s directly related to the temperatures and how packed out the snow has gotten since the last snowfall. I find that it’s usually not too terribly icy unless it drops below 35 degrees. If it’s snowing WHILE night riding, you’ve hit the jackpot! To the untrained eye, it seems like it’d be cold and miserable. It’s actually not as cold when it’s cloudy and snowing and it’s the furthest from miserable when you’re floating on clouds! If it’s icy it can still be fun, but it probably wouldn’t be the best occasion to try that new trick you’ve been dying to land.

Keystone Night Riding Schedule

Thumbs up for Gorgeous Sunsets and Snowboarding fun!! If you’re in Keystone and want to experience something magical, I’d highly suggest going night riding! Click HERE to see the most recent night skiing schedule!!

My New Food Truck Trailer!

I had this adorable food truck trailer custom built for my produce business! The trailer opens up on the side for customers to walk up and it has an entry door on the end. I had shelves built into it as well as a refrigerator to keep the produce cold. There area a few more convenient features like a built-in cash drawer, inner lights, electrical outlets, and 4 sinks. It even has a window on each end to let in a lot of natural light! I had the trailer painted bright green to signify the all-vegan business as well as enhancing the “eco-friendly” vibes. It’s so cute! I designed the graphics myself on Adobe Illustrator. After spending hours designing them just the way I wanted, I had them installed by Sign Safari in Frisco. I really enjoy decorating all around the trailer and get most of the stuff from thrift stores and garage sales. My business is small, so I have to save money where I can! Besides saving money, I believe in “reusing, reducing and recycling” where possible. I give various incentives to customers who bring their own bag or return boxes and cartons used during their former purchase. The customers are always so wonderful and share the same values. Those who have seen the trailer so far seem to love it! The trailer can be hitched up to my Jeep and pulled to any destination in need of some farm fresh Colorado produce. Check out our Facebook Page to keep up with our farmers market schedule and locations. Full cases of Palisade Peaches and other produce are available for delivery or pick-up! Be sure to keep an eye out for the bright green trailer around Summit and Park counties during the produce season. If the window is open, so are we!

The Crystal Mill, part of the National Register of Historic Places, is an 1892 wooden powerhouse located on an outcrop above the Crystal River in Crystal, Colorado

The Crystal Mill is located approximately 6 miles east of Marble, just before the ghost town of Crystal. It is only reachable in the summer and fall months by a rough, one-lane, 4-wheel-drive road.

In earlier days the Crystal Mill was also known as the Sheep Mountain Powerhouse or Lost Horse Mill, and even nicknamed dead horse mill by some. This structure is a very popular place among photographers, probably the most popular in Colorado. You can find it on many book covers, calendars and post cards but there’s nothing quite like seeing it for yourself!

The mill has never actually had any electricity. The waterwheel on the Crystal River generated compressed air that miners used to power silver ore extraction machinery.

Autumn Breeze & Colorful Leaves

These lovely pictures were captured in the months of September and October in Breckenridge, Blue River & Alma Colorado. There’s nothing quite as magical as the time of year when the winter winds turn the leaves, enhancing each plant and tree with a breathtaking contrast of warm and bright colors. This colorful phenomenon attracts what we call leaf peepers, or leafers from all over; tourists who come up just to see the beautiful leaves and take pictures.. and can you blame them?! It’s certainly any photographer or nature lover’s dream to see and capture this kind of short-lived beauty.

Montgomery Reservoir & Magnolia Mine

Montgomery Reservoir is one of my favorite places to be in the Summer and Fall. This place is around the corner from where I live and it’s quite magical to say the least! The area is rich with intriguing history and breathtaking views.

The area is full of the most vibrant colors in the Fall when the aspens turn. As the leaves fall, the winter airs start blowing through and the stream ices up. This is all we get to see before they close the road down for the winter months. You can, of course, go snowshoeing through the area though if you’d like.

If you hike or take the 4×4 trail past the mine there are some gorgeous views and a few mining parts scattered around. You will also see old mine shafts hanging off the side of the mountains above.

Climbing Mount Lincoln

If you’re up for a more thrilling (dangerous) excursion, the backside of Mt. Lincoln towers over the reservoir and Magnolia Mine and is one of the 14’ers in the area. From this side of Lincoln you will have a much more difficult time climbing up than the normal public trail hike from the other side. I did this with a friend one day and we mostly CLIMBED our way up. It was pretty dangerous and we should have used equipment for parts of it. I guess I should mention .. THERE IS NO TRAIL! If you want to just climb 1/3 of the way up there are some beautiful waterfalls that form from the melted snow and can be seen looking up from the bottom near the mine. You can get to these by climbing up the boulders that are clearly visible from the bottom. We did this in June and had to traverse through a lot of snow, but then when we did it again in July it was perfect as the snow had mostly melted and there were more waterfalls from the snow melt.

Magnolia Mill

Magnolia Mill sits next to the river flowing down into the reservoir. NORMALLY the mine is closed off to the public and has no trespassing signs all over it.. but one day I was fortunate enough to find the door that was normally boarded up, laying down on the ground.. and against all better judgement.. I HAD to explore! (shhh!) What I found inside was too neat.. here are some pictures.. (also see videos below)

The History of Magnolia Mills

The first miners to this area set up The Snow Blind Mining District, which later became the Montgomery District in 1861. This district proved rich first with gold discoveries then later discoveries abundant in silver, establishing the highest mines in North America. The 1930’s Magnolia Mill replaced the former one from the 1800’s that burnt down. It processed the gold and silver that was brought down by trams from surrounding mines located hundreds of feet above the mine.

The town of Montgomery was built in 1861 and housed over 1,000 mine workers, mill workers and their families. The town consisted of hotels,, mercantile and dry good stores, drug stores, sawmills and a variety f saloons, including the largest dance hall in the region!

Mt. Lincoln, the 14,000ft peak that towers over the reservoir, was named in honor of President Lincoln who was in office at that time. They even sent him a bar of gold from the Montgomery Mine!

The remains of the town of Montgomery are now under water. Colorado Springs bought the town in 1954 and flooded it to make the reservoir that provides drinking water for the city. Thankfully we still have the mill as a reminder of the bustling mining town of Montgomery that once nested itself between these gorgeous mountains.

Behind the Scenes

This place is off-limits now and closed up by metal bars but I managed to get some pictures and videos inside the mill before it became closed off for good. If you visit, you can still peek into the Mine through various holes in the wall. This place is worth visiting if you’re ever n Alma, Colorado. You’ll rarely see other people and there are plenty of things to do and see!

Colorado's Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve

The Sand Dunes are a fun place for all ages with incredible views and opportunities to surf the sand! I highly recommend checking it out if you’re ever in Southern Colorado in the summertime. They rent out sleds and sand-boards, or you can just play in the sand like a kid in a gigantic sandbox! Surfing or hiking through the sand makes for a great workout with beautiful views all around. Be sure to check the weather before you go, you definitely don’t want to be caught out there in a storm!

Highest Sand Dunes in North America!

Alamosa is known as the “Gateway to the Great Sand Dunes.” Colorado’s Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is nestled in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Alamosa

These are the tallest sand dunes in North America and are truly a remarkable sight to see. Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve is open all day and night, every day of the year. The park is filled with sand dunes, forests, wetlands and alpine lakes and a rich history to explore.

Thrill-Seekers

As you approach the area, the colossal sand formations reveal themselves as giant staggering mountains of sand. The great sand dunes is a great place for families and thrill seekers alike! Enjoy plenty of exciting activities for everyone like hiking, backpacking, sand-boarding, sand-sledding, swimming in the creek, horseback riding, fat biking, fishing, hunting and even ADA accessible activities like sand wheel-chairing! You can rent a sandboard or sand sled in Alamosa or at the Oasis Store near the Great Sand Dunes Visitor Center.

Off-Roading & Camping

If you’re looking for some off-road adventuring, the Medano Pass Primitive Road is a backcountry road that winds through a canyon toward the Sangre de Cristo mountains. This road requires a 4WD vehicle, mostly for clearance needed to get through the thick sand and multiple river crossings. ATV’s are not permitted anywhere in the national park. Drive out to one of the many scenic points and set up camp! There are plenty of amazing places to camp out among the twinkling stars. Be sure to check out the latest alerts before you plan your next adventure!

Zapata Falls

If you visit here, be sure and check out Zapata Falls nearby! Zapata Falls is truly a hidden gem. This gorgeous 25-foot waterfall is located within the San Luis Valley near the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. It’s surrounded by beautiful rock crevasses, carved out by the water that started its journey as Snowmelt from the San Juan Mountains. The falls are also very stunning in the winter when it freezes into a sculpture of ice. When you arrive to this destination, you’ll find that the parking lot and trailhead tower over incredibly stunning views of the Great Sand Dunes. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash. There are plenty of hiking trails and things to do in the area such as camping, bird watching and mountain biking. Take a pleasant hike through high desert and experience something truly magical hidden in the San Juan mountains.

These 14’ers are close to my home so I have traversed them many times, and from many angles! I have done the trails the way you’re supposed to, but have also climbed up the backside of Lincoln from Montgomery reservoir and the backside of Bross from Windy Ridge.

From the top of any of these mountains, you can look down and see Kite Lake, and you’ll quickly see where the lake get it’s name! It’s shaped like a kite, tail and all!
