look for viable buds along the new growth ... that will tell you where it will grow next season ...

at a min ... i would not prune until next year .. presuming i had a goal which i could accomplish with such pruning ...

how about a pic of the whole.. with special emphasis on where this growth is coming from.. there is a chance its root stock growth.. rather than the named cultivar ... this would be coming from below the graft .... if you can find it ...

this is most likely a 'cultivated varietal' of the species ... and the shortened term is cultivar ... just fyi ... and the species is often the root stock ....

Larches (and true cedars) always have needles comparatively thinly spread along first year extension growths, with the tufts of them appearing on spurs produced later - as the branch section ages.

That looks like a very nice specimen of Pinus aristata behind the Larch. I can't seem to grow a nice specimen up here.

Close maackia, it's a Pinus longaeva 'Formal Form'. I'm surprised it grows reasonably well here in the humid midwest. It is one of our original conifers, in this location now for 9 years. I'm sure these do better in arid climates, but I like it and it keeps trucking along.

I have tried a couple of times over the past few days to post pictures without success. It's not the first time it has happened -- very frustrating. I'm not sure what the problem is, but it pushes me further away from GW. I like the folks here and enjoy posting, but GW does make it difficult.
