Each June going on 15 or so years, a "Garden Rendevous" is held at various gardens mainly in the Dubuque, IA. area. Dennis' garden was the first garden of the day. It is a world class garden. It's is stunning.

I know you will enjoy the photos.

Dax

I'm your photo host, Dax.

Dax, we thank you for sharing your photos! I'ts amazing!

    L+M S

PS: Apparently it comes to bad transliteration names - perhaps rightly Picea abies Zajecice (not Picea abies Ajlcice)?

I agree L+M, amazing's the right word. Thanks for sharing these photos, this is like something out of the GW glory days of old.

What a great backdrop for a garden which is so well designed, lovingly cared for, and stocked with so many super plants. To me the standouts in this photo parade are 'Karina' and 'Brandon Reckor', and 'Joe's Bess'.

Does Dennis' 'Day's End' have a broom (on a broom) forming in the circled area in your photo? Also I wanted to ask about the growth around the base of 'Lopalpun' - is that the understock?

It must have been a very fun event, looks like a good time was had by all.

Zajecice, ah hah! Yep, it didn't look right to me either. I'll pass the word to Dennis. I'd show you the tag but it's what I wrote! ;-)

Alex, I also sent an email to Dennis asking if that is the graft that I circled. The rest looks to me like it is a seedling. The rootstock is still on Lopalpun, that's correct. On Brandon Recker I think it's probably just a late break for those buds, but, I will mention something to Dennis.

I said to Zsolt today I could spend an entire day to attempt to photograph what you guys didn't see. I might have got 1/10th or 1/20th or even more of what's there, not photographed.
I didn't get the bed layouts either. It was truly amazing.

    Kindest regards to all.

You are right Dax, sometimes you may go back to finish the documentation of Dennis's garden. WHat he owns, is a part of the american conifer history.

I was glad to see Charlie Hunter, who earlier took part in the expeditions of Chub Harper around Iowa, Michigan etc 30 years ago. They visited all cemeteries and found about 600 brooms. Some of them are still alive in different conifer collections or as a part of the Stupka collection.

I have always preferred the GW format over facebook, so I agree... Pretty cool to get that Glory days feel back on the board. Dennis actually posted several pictures of 'The Blues' on fb, and it got something like 160 likes and tons of comments. I have to believe that is the best single specimen I have ever seen. Ditto on 'Glauca Pendula', unreal!

Some of the other real stand out's for me are 'Stanley Mountain' , 'Buffy', and 'Mittenwalt'... It would be great if they allowed Buffy to be shared, that's too nice to only be in 2 gardens!! It needs to be in mine as well : )

Much appreciated for taking the time to post these photos. Really one of the premier gardens in the country/world.

Hi Alex, no broom on Brandon Reckor.

Picea abies 'Zajecice' is correct. Bob Fincham confirms so where Dennis bought his plant. Thanks L+M.

I cannot edit the first set of photos, so:

Picea abies 'Zajecice' - Zajecice is Czech for "Rabbity Place" (Grafted 2010)

Denny's grounds are truly amazing. If anyone in the midwest is interested in getting in on the fun, this year's rendezvous is scheduled for June 5th.
