Very, very nice cultivar, I never saw a golden one of this species before!
How did Jim found this one, as a seedling selection or as a branch mutation?
Isn't it still propagated yet?
It does have plenty of good useable scions :0)

Not named after me lol Ken, the 'Boy' is a tribute to Jim Boyko Bob Fincham added. Jim, or a close friend of his, discovered it a short distance from a road, in a location I didn't catch, but locally, obviously to Boring, Oregon. It is a seedling Edwin and I am sure scions have been taken for some propogating. A big collector of Tsuga mertensiana myself, I was thrilled to see the plant and even happier to know someday it may grow in my gardens.

Bob drove, I tried to buy lunch(and failed) and it was great as always stuck literally between Larry Stanley, Bob Fincham and Jim Boyko. I sure feel blessed to bump into the right people in this hobby!

I did some home with some cool plants which I will share in the next few weeks as I get them into the ground.

I saw his plant a few months ago and the color is very nice. I'm not sure if it is a winter color or gold all year. From what I remember Jim told me was that his friend found it while hunting somewhere on Mt Hood, this fall. They returned later and dug it. Talking to another friend who saw it, we thought a good name would ne Mountain Gold or Alpine Glow. But Sparky Boy isn't too bad either. Hopefully the grafts take. Sometimes golden scions don't do the best. Especially now that it is mertensiana which never do outstanding on percent of graft survival. Nice plant.

How interesting to see photos of Tsuga mertensiana [Sparky Boy] and hear about how the plant was found. I like hearing about the history of the plants. I like adding notes on my database with the hx information of plants I have.
