Sciadopitys Grafts

sugi

I graft since two years some Sciadopitys cultivars, i share with you my succesfull experience!

I have grafted in february 2011 and 2012, and cultivated the graft with an indoor glasshouse installed in front of a window. One of the more difficult things is to find the rootstock, very rare and expensive even in young plants.

At the first, preparation of the rootstock.

After having cut the rootstock

Scionwood preparation, i cut both side.

The scionwood is Sciadopitys verticillata 'Moonlight' as you can see after the fixation on the rootstock.(sorry for bad pic quality)

The same graft two month later and after cutting the rootstock, you can see the new grow.

General view with all other graft.

I will update with recent pics for show the evolution.

Julien

Julien, I also see (right upper) that you grafted my 'Mireille' which does have a very special orange-yellow Spring colour.

Are there any difficulties with growing your root stock from seed such as special stratification?

    Edwin;
Yes, i like Sciadopitys vert. 'Mireille'. I tryed to graft because my mother plant grow healty and faster so i had scionwood.

    baxz5oh;
In general I do Sciadopitys seedlings in the fall, in November, and stratification is natural because I let a seedling tray outside and towards the end of April beginning of may the seeds of seeds. It need very long time until they can be use for rootstock, about 4 years.

I enjoy Sciadopitys only of photos, because our soil is not good for it. Most of them came from Holland to Malik.

Again congratulations, Julien. You've got the knack.

Zsolt, the Malik collection is very good. I see a lot of 'Filip' Sciadopity's. What have you Edwin? Four selections?

    Hi Olav,
I discovered it as dense little ball hidden in a 'Goldammer'
    It's still under observation...

How long it took to root and what percent are rooted ?
I have some seedlings of Sciadopitys ,sowed on May , what are minium temp. to winterize them?

  • baxswoh

Can you walk us through the steps of your rooting process?

I do Sciadopitys seedling in the end of autumn when the seeds are fresh on sand and down with well drained soil, they stay outside a bit sheltered for stratification (as in the nature when seeds are fallen).

The Sciadopitys rooting is very unequal at best the roots begin till 3 month and some branches 1 year later are not brown but without roots. About 50% sucess after a year.

Thanks for your compliments, it was a great surprise because i never heard a method for rooting Sciadopitys.

I once got a twisted Sciadopitys. The habit of this grafted plant disappeared after short time. I have heard that 'Explosion' also lose its habit if grafted. No I have an own roots 'Explosion'. From a German nurseryman I learnt that he had given up grafting weeping Sciadopitys as the grafted plant never would be weeping. I have tried several weeping forms, and my experience is that it will take 3-5 years before a grafted (weeping) form will begin to be weeping and more so after that time. Has anyone rooted other Sciadopitys cultivars than 'Wintergreen', 'Tsai Cheng', 'Explosion'? Could all cultivars of Sciadopitys be rooted as cuttings?

  • gardener365

    They can all be rooted.

'Wintergreen' is rooted for grafting purposes, often.

You should try rooting some of the weeping forms to see if they are more pendulous than those are grafted.

  • Olav Kalleberg

Still the unsolved mystery: Will a grafted pendulous keep this habit? I still don't know - after having studied grafts now being 4-40 years old. Any clue?
