Pinus sylvestris 'Inverleith'

This tree was purchased mail order, and planted early spring 2009.

Originally, it had nice variegated needles.

The new growth that pushed in summer 2009 did not show the variegation. Any ideas why?

Here is the plant today.

Not much variegation at all. But it's growing like a weed, and coning!

(Ken I hope you don't mind, I stole your growth rate chart idea . . .)

I saw a few 5' specimans at a nursery this spring and they didn't have any variegation.

I have 1 in the past, and like you, rarely variegated.
Maybe it's due to the ground, I have a clay.
By this way I cutted back my plant after some years.

Pinus sylvestris "Argentea" look very better.

I also have a variegated mutation which was find in the scionwood material. I keep it under observation but I dont have the feeling it will not show the variegatation later. I take a photo and share it asap.
By the way who has a good specimen in variegated sylvestris?

Zsolti, 'Barrie Bergman' is a good sylvestris. Grows very slow though. Also, the white burns - but is still considered to be an exceptional plant. I have one, and will snap a photo soon.

Ok, so mine isn't the only one losing variegation. My soil is also clay. I will probably keep the tree at least for now, even without the contrasting needle color it's a nice plant. Thanks for the tips on Argentea and Barrie Bergman - potential future additions!
