Highlights of the Rathje Garden - ACS Tour, Iowa

Jeff and Laura Rathje have a one acre garden in McCausland, IA. They also run a landscaping business and a nursery called Lasting Beauty. Their garden started establishment in 1988 and was excellent.

My favorite: Pinus koraiensis 'Oculus Draconis':

A beauty I've never heard of: Pinus sylvestris 'Var. Gold':

Thuja occidentalis 'Winter Pink'

All of us wonder about the list of Picea pungens cultivars starting with 'RM'. Here's one: P.p. 'RM 203':

Pinus mugo 'Honeycomb':

Tsuga canadensis 'Moon Frost':

And a few overviews of their garden:

Great pix! What kind of oak is that in the last picture?

What is the big tree on the right, next to last picture?

Quercus alba (White Oak). I can tell as I'm familiar with a few.

The other tree I don't have have a clue but the leaves resembled Hickory or Ailanthus. More Hickory though as Ailanthus has a slight resemblence but is a larger leaf. So probably an Ash.

What's so mysterious about Room (RM) numbers ?

Typically, 'RM 203' can be found on the second floor.

Presumably, that Picea pungens cultivar was grafted on the second floor, room 203, before being planted out in the garden... D'oh !

    Hey Dax,
Great pics and it was great to meet you, finally!

The tree in the second to last pic, on the right, is an Amur Cork tree, Phellodendron amurense. There was no cultivar name listed on the tag (I looked). There are a couple of male cultivars of this tree in the trade (this tree is dioecious, male and female on separate trees). 'His Majesty' (a hybrid selection from the MN Landscape Arboretum) and 'Macho' are the two most common cultivars offered for sale. This tee has great corky bark and very nice yellow fall color. The tree is also fairly fast growing. Don't plant a female tree as the tree seeds everywhere (it can be a pest.)

Thanks Dax! Just the right amount of eye-candy: enough to make my mouth water, but not so much as to make me cry that I couldn't go to the convention. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind seing more either. . . .

Thanks Mike and I've been waiting a long time to meet you. Gosh, years.

    Coming atcha guys!
Bluespruce they had this labled 'Steef Weeping' which I'm thinking is a mistake for 'Stiff Weeping':

    Pinus aristata 'Blue Heron'

    Pinus parviflora 'Pygmy Yatsubusa'

    Tsuga canadensis 'Tiny Leaf'

    Taxus cuspidata 'Dwarf Bright Gold'

    Abies koreana 'Silber Mavers'

    Abies concolor 'Watezii Prostrata'

    Picea orientalis 'Barnes' (2 trunks?)

Larix decidua 'Lanark #2' (Seedlings of 'Lanark')

    Pseudotsuga menziesii 'Tempelhof Compacta'

    Taxus baccata 'Judith'
