    Jan.

Thanks for posting your photo of Picea g. 'Echinoformis'.

In another thread there is some discussion who has the real Picea g. 'Echinoformis. Other than the color mutation yours looks the same as the other 3-4 posted there with the exception of Clements that has the short stiff needles about an inch long.

I am of the opinion Clement has his hands on the real Picea g. 'Echinoformis" and the rest are mariana clones.

Do you have an opinion or comment based on the totally different look between the two? It also appears the new growth on yours is still developing and has not reached full maturity which would bring it closer to matching the others in question.

I'm certainly of the opinion that only Clement's plant is valid.

Two things we know about Jan... We know what he looks like and we know he doesn't answer questions for what~ ever reason.

    Your right Dax.

Clements pic looks about right to me, once again I doubt any of the others are the true form especially Jan's which definitely looks mariana to me. Also very difficult to tell what the other photo's are for sure, especially when they are still furnished in young growth. I will post some photo's if ever it stops raining here.

Interesting mutation. It suppresses early chlorophyll expression, appearing to produce albinism. But then the chlorophyll develops and the lovely white foliage is no more. Until the next season.

Hey bluespruce & all, these are from Clement:

Foliage detail of Picea glauca 'Echiniformis'

Then Picea glauca (top photo) followed by Picea mariana:

It's very obvious... plus a person can see the resemblance of Picea glauca var. albertiana characteristics in the true plant.

Clement was very aware of this problem in the trade with this plant as I had mentioned. Just one of those things that someone knows about that not a lot of others do. I don't think it's all that fair to blame anyone as conifers "mutate" quite frequently...

    Well gentlemen,
first Dave, I think now you are right as to my mutation, it is some clone of Picea mariana, but 10 years ago I purchased this spruce with label Picea glauca. I have to say, I never think so much about purchased trees, label is label and it is not my discoveries...., but for me it is not easy sometimes recognize some cultivars of Picea glauca, becouse I am working mainly with our spruce Picea abies....
Some examples, can you recognize it ??

As to mutation, maybe more than 30 years I have this spruce, maybe it it is Picea glauca, I don´t know....

Four years ago I found this yellow mutation on it....

    Last year I grafted it.....

    That´s all.....
As to my stupid face...., some explanation, maybe. 46 years of my life I spent in communist system. 46 years it was impossible to travel abroad. For example to travel to Great Britain, Holland to buy some special, nice, tree cultivars. / Maybe that´s a reason Czechs started works with witch´s brooms / But people from so called West Europe could go to Czech republic and visit our collections and change second hand and sales gardening tools from their supermarkets with our origin trees discoveries. It was impossible in communist era in our republic to buy some special plant stimulators, hormones, tapes, knives, scissors etc. Some so called friendly visitors than change names of ours new cultivars...,and you know... That´s way maybe I am trying to identify my discoveries with my stupid face. Yes I´d have my dirty fingers on this superiors origins, it is clear....One picture is better than a thousands words....
That´s all folks..., sorry for my english.

Jan, what's that purple beech I presume it is in the 11th photo with the wavy leaves?

That's pretty sharp whatever it is.

Your enthusiasm is champion by the way. You deserve a beer, in a big old trophy!
