fixating on a specific named plant... could be years or decades before you find it for sale ....

what about it is making you toes tingle.. perhaps we can recommend a look alike substitution? have you actually seen it in person ... if so .. maybe you can beg a couple scions off it.. and send it to a grafter next winter ....

Not in any of my photo collections from various arboreta around the US. As Ken says, you can write all the conifer specialty nurseries and see if one of them owns the plant in their collections. That's where I'd start. Rich's Foxwillow Pines, Bethlehem Nursery, and Coenosium Gardens is where I'd begin my quest.

here's a little background.

I saw a nice specimen a few years ago on an ACS convention auction block. It's a miniature thunbergii with fasciated candles that looked like clamshells as they push new growth. I can't remember what the winning bid was, but it was way out of my league.

On goes my search:

I recently visted Bob Fincham at Coenosium. He said he only gets a scion or two a year off of his stock plant and wasn't actively producing any plants.

I emailed Stanley and Sons who said that it may be a couple of years before they have any for sale, even though it's listed in his catalog.

Dennis at Bethlehem apparently had a few ready to sell this year, but they took a hard whack this winter. He said maybe next year.

It isn't on Foxwillow's website, but you're right; it's worth a try to see if they have any.

I love a good hunt -- this one almost has a Holy Grail feel to it.
