Pinus heldreichii 'Banderica' - Iseli. A gift from Marshall.

Picea glauca 'Ivan' a two-year graft. Excellent powder blue globe found and named for a friend's son just miles from 'The Harper Collection'

Picea glauca 'Terry's Variegated' - also a two-year graft:

That's all for now. Feel free to add.

Here's a nice fat cone I found today. It's on Abies koreana 'Blue Magic' which I have (3) of these of and (2) have a cone forming. Sure am glad I collected pollen from Abies koreana 'Wellenseind'. You can see the pollen on the cone.

Fantastic! I've never seen a cone on such a young graft!
I wonder what the children will look like? Keep us posted next spring.

Wow, nice cone on the Abies koreana 'Blue Magic' and I like the Pinus thunbergii 'Ogi' too.

Picea glauca 'Densata' (my first Picea to really leaf out) and spring color of Juniperus horizontalis 'Mother Lode'

(quite a change compared to this past winter)

Nate, thanks. 'Dundaga' looks interesting. Don't know 'Densata' - I wonder if it is just a good (black hills spruce) cultivar -- named pre-1959 when cultivar names were allowed to be Latin..... could be. Save a scion of that aristata for me!

    Tonite's late sun photos:

Fagus sylvatica 'Aurea Pendula' - morning sun only - a must (dappled mostly-shade otherwise). Worth showing:

Dax, you're right about 'Densata', it's not a cultivar but a natural variety.
The true name is Picea glauca var. densata.

That Pinus heldreichii 'Banderica' looks awesome, it's on my wishinglist ;0)

Watch out with the lawn mower that you'll not cut off the Picea glauca 'Terry's Variegated' which is a rare gem if you ask me.

Nate your blue Picea pungens 'Globosa' is more known under Picea pungens 'Glauca Globosa' which is a Dutch seedling selection.
'R.H. Montgomery' is the U.S. variant which is pretty simular if not the same...

Wow I'm loving that Tsuga diversifolia 'Loowit'! I was hoping to pick one up at a plant sale last weekend but they were sold out. Are diversifolia just as shade tolerant as the canadensis?

"Are diversifolia just as shade tolerant as the canadensis?"

Pretty much so, but zone 4 may be a bit tough on them. I picked a small 'Loowit' up two weeks ago for $8.99 at Minor's down here. It was part of their "Fanciful Gardens" bunch from Iseli.

Thanks TJ. I'll have to keep Minor's in mind the next time I'm in the area. I live in the Madison area and currently have two Tsuga canadensis that are doing fine but they've only been through one winter so far.

How much heat and sun can the Tsuga diversifolia 'Loowit' take?

  • monkeytreeboy15

My plant is in Zone 8ish.. in shade, but it would be just fine in sun. It may suffer sun scorch if it's intense sun, but you'd probably be good.
