Creeping juniper is a useful and maintenance-free shrub, popular with landscapers because it is trouble-free, easy to grow, and needs very little care – virtually none. It comes from Canada and forms evergreen cushions of various colours. Andorra Variegata is an eye-catching variety with creamy-beige variegation. The main colour is mid green and up to 50% of the non-prickly needles may emerge creamy beige or almost light yellow coloured. It makes a compact shrub, growing less than 50 cm tall and about 1.5m wide at medium growth rate. It is not strictly ground-covering and the tips of new branches rise up a little above the main mass of the plant which makes an interesting texture.

Grow creeping juniper in well-drained soil of any pH, preferably in full sun. In does not like deep shade so avoid places under trees whose canopies cast a deep shade. Ideal for covering slopes, rockeries, and as companion plants for taller shrubs or half-standard trees with small crowns. Fertilizing is not needed but will slightly increase growth rate and enhance shrub density. Creeping juniper withstand pollution and drought, once established. It is hardy to min. -34°C (USDA zone 4), possibly a little more. Suitable for outdoor containers and troughs.
