White tern, Gygis alba rothchildi, sitting on a branch

White tern, Gygis alba rothchildi, sitting on a branch, this graceful, delicate, snow-white bird with the big black eyes, is really aptly named. Without landing they hit the water surface when they discover a fish. During the day they swallow their prey, and towards evening they fly back across with up to six small fish in its beak to the island, to feed their young. On the Midway Islands hatch approximately 7500 fairy tern pairs. (Photo by: Education Images/Universal Images Group via Getty Images)
