from over 3,000 reviews "Live food - Cockroaches vers. Sizes
The Madagascar Cockroach (Gromphadorrhina portentosa) gets its name from the hissing sounds it can produce when it feels threatened. This impressively large, beautifully colored cockroach grows to 8 inches in size and is almost a bit too bad to feed.
Madagascar pouting cockroaches are used as a good live food source by almost all reptiles large enough to handle the huge cockroaches.
As an alternative to crickets or grasshoppers, the cockroaches are readily accepted, adding a valuable variety to the diet.
Cockroaches hiss and hiss not only when threatened, but also for communication, such as when two of the territorial males meet.
The Madagascar cockroach does not normally breed indoors because the climate in living quarters is too dry and cool for it. If a Madagascar Painted Cockroach does escape, it usually starves to death in the apartment after some time. The females of the Madagascar pothouse cockroach incubate their eggs in their abdomen and give birth to live young. Until these are sexually mature again, 5 to 10 months pass.
Keeping the large Madagascar lazer cockroach is fairly simple. Place egg cartons in a well-sealing large plastic box or faunarium with a ventilation grill in the lid. The breeding container should have at least a 40 x 50 cm footprint for three to six animals and be well structured. Egg cartons provide area for crawling, but you can also furnish the faunarium with bark mulch, soil and leaf litter, and provide structure with branches and other climbing opportunities. Also provide two feeding dishes.
Cockroaches come from the tropics and like it warm and humid. The floor needs to be sprayed with water regularly. The humidity should be about 60% and the temperature in the faunarium with Madagascar cockroaches should be between 23°C and 28°C. Radiant heaters or heating mats are suitable for heating. Extra lighting is not necessary, normal daylight is sufficient. Every four to five months you have to change the bedding.
The Madagascar cockroaches arefed with dry food for dogs or cats from the pet store. Vegetables and fruits as well as fresh leaves are also good. Madagascar cockroaches love to eat scraps such as cucumber peels, carrot peels, sections of zucchini, apples, salad scraps, etc.
Fresh food that is not eaten should be removed after some time to prevent mold from forming or mites from settling.
