Beloved iCarly Revival Cancelled In A Surprising Move By Paramount+

Following

Carly Shay’s story as an adult is over. After three seasons, Paramount PARA + has decided not to renew the iCarly revival on its streaming platform.

The iCarly revival premiered in June 2021, nearly a decade after the namesake Nickelodeon show ended. The original series ran from 2007 to 2012 and starred Miranda Cosgrove, Jennette McCurdy and Nathan Kress as a group of best friends who created an online webcast that went viral.

Meanwhile, the recent installment followed the friends as they navigated work, love and family years later as adults. Cosgrove reprised her role as Carly, Kress as Freddie and Jerry Trainor as Spencer. Laci Mosley joined the cast as Carly’s new BFF Harper, as well as Jaidyn Triplett, who played Freddie’s stepdaughter, Millicent.

The reboot also finally delivered a romantic relationship between Freddie and Carly. In the Season 3 finale, the couple tied the knot and teased a huge cliffhanger: Carly and Spencer’s mother was finally being introduced. Unfortunately, due to the cancellation, their mother’s true identity may never be revealed.

In 2021, the iCarly revival was the second-most-watched original series, according to Deadline. Although the series ranked among Paramount+’s top performers, the streaming service revealed their decision to pull the show a few months after releasing the third season.

“The series had a great three-season run and delivered on what fans really wanted to see with Carly and Freddie finally getting together,” a Paramount+ spokesperson said in a statement, according to Deadline. “We want to thank the entire cast, the writers, directors and producers along with the whole crew for their dedication, creativity and talent.”

The X account of the iCarly revival’s writers’ room posted a statement after the cancellation news.

“It was truly such an incredible experience working on this show. Thank you all so much for your support and enthusiasm. I’m gonna miss saying ‘Oh the fans are gonna lose their minds!’ almost as much as I will miss working with such hilarious and kind people,” the account penned on X.

Although the reboot proved to be a success, some of the show’s stars — including Cosgrove — expressed hesitancy when they were first asked to return for the project.

“To be perfectly honest, when I was first asked about maybe coming back, all the first talks about it started a couple years ago. And I was like, ‘No, we’re never gonna do that,’” Cosgrove told Variety in June 2022. “And I called [my original costars] Jerry and Nathan and they were like, ‘No we shouldn’t do that.’ And then we just kept talking about it.”

Cosgrove, who served as an executive producer for the revival, added that she realized that “all the people that originally watched” the Nickelodeon show were “kids who grew up and are adults now” too.

“We were like, ‘Why don’t we make the show for them?’ They’re the people that loved the show originally and they’re really who this is for,” she continued. “So that really gave us a lot of direction after we realized that we were all on board and wanted to do that. And it started to get really fun after that.”

The first three seasons of the iCarly revival are available to stream on Paramount+.
