The Grey Phalarope is a dainty, scarce, mainly autumn passage migrant occasionally seen singly on coastal salt pans, though principally migrates off-shore. Unlike most waders, swims busily, constantly picking food items from surface of the water. In winter plumage, care required to separate from rare Red-necked Phalarope by its thicker and shorter bill, usually with a small brownish-yellow base and, in adults, plain grey upperparts.
