The Blue Spruce is known for it's blue tinted branches, it's also known as the Colorado Blue Spruce and it is the state tree of Colorado (surprise!). Blue Spruce are slower growing than white spruce and have a shallow root system, but resist wind very well. Small trees benefit from root pruning to increase rooting area. It's sought after for hedging as it does make a very pretty dense hedge once the trees are about 6ft tall. At maturity the blue spruce tops out around 60ft... so plan ahead.
Soak seeds in water for 24 hours. No stratification required. Sow seeds 1/8" deep and firm soil. Seeds can also be wintersown outside in early fall- let nature do the work!
As with most fruits/trees, we recommend potting the seedlings up to a 3 or 4" pot to start, then switching to a half gallon or gallon sized pot as it grows. Harden seedlings off very slowly and keep them in a sheltered location (morning and evening sun but avoiding scorching noon sun), until they can take a bit more. Blue Spruce seedlings in particular are susceptible to frost! By late summer they should be ready to adjust to their permanent location. Plant at least 6 weeks before the ground fully freezes over. Protect young seedlings from mice/deer and other wildlife.
