Ambrosius Aurelius Theodosius MACROBIUS & MACROBE

In sommium Scipionis lib. II. Saturnaliorum, lib. VII

Apud Seb. Gryphium, Lugduni (Lyon) 1556, In 8 (10x17,7cm), 567pp. (62), relié.

New edition. First published in Sebastian Gryphe appears to be the 1538 Brand of the printer on the title page, and seven vignettes in the first text: The Dream of Scipio, with a curious world map that divides the world into climatic zones. Lowercase Italic print. Velin full time. Smooth spine with title in black pen. Title page lined margin. Lack filled the margins of the sheet 17, making illegible note. Apart from these few flaws, good copy, very fresh. Both texts collected in this edition are the major works of Macrobius, who lived about AD 400 and which we know little except that he was a neo-Platonist philosopher and opposed to Christianity increasingly prevalent Stoic. The idea of ??the dream of Scipio is extracted from the Republic of Cicero in which it assigns a dream the young Scipio, venue of a conversation between the fallen heroes of the Republic, including his father and grandfather. The book consists comments Macrobius, including the creation of the universe. The second text refers to the Saturnalia feast days for the Romans there Macrobius describes the discussions in the house of Vettius Praetextatus, the author deals with different subjects, mythological and astronomical, medical, citing numerous ancient texts. This book has remained an important source regarding the dating of many missing texts, and most importantly, provide a model for the sixteenth century imitate plenty this way of exposing the science.
