Pinus mugo subsp. uncinata

Pinus mugo subsp. uncinata

Mountain Pine

synonym Pinus uncinata
Pinus mugo var. rostrata

Description

Pinus mugo subsp. uncinata (mountain pine, synonym Pinus uncinata, Pinus mugo var. rostrata) comes from the mountains of North-East Spain, the Pyrenees and the western Alps. It differs most notably from the other Pinus mugo subspecies on account of the fact that it grows somewhat taller and can reach a height of 24 metres and 10 metres wide. The crown is densely branched and wide oval to pyramidal with upward-growing branches, arranged in whorls. Pinus mugo subsp. uncinata also works well as a quirky multi-stem but upright tree, with what looks like a slightly more irregular flattened spherical shape crown.

The green to pale brown ripening cones of the mountain pine differ clearly from those of Pinus mugo on account of the highly inclined base, and the scales have a pyramidal top with its tip folded down in a hook. The dark green, three to six centimetre long needles are similar to those of the other Pinus mugo and arranged closely in pairs of two on the branches. The fragrant needles stay on the tree for between five and ten years. In May the tree produces yellow male and red female flowers which are on the tips of the branches. The bark of the branches and sapwood is grey brown, flaky and scaly.

The mountain pine grows as a pioneer species in areas where other trees cannot and thrives on poor, wet to dry soils. A site that is exposed to the wind, coastal wind or extreme cold pose no problem either. This strong tree is, therefore, very suited for planting in parks and gardens. But also makes an excellent candidate for roofs for example as a single specimen or in groups. Plant Pinus mugo subsp. uncinata in a sunny site and avoid paved areas.
